How much would you pay for this horse?

Hello, I’ve completely lost touch with horse prices so just wondered if anyone on here was horsey and could help

ive owned horses for 20 years but obviously the prices increased massively over Covid, I know they’ve come down a bit but I’ve no idea what they’re like now especially coming into winter

so just wondering if anyone could help! What would you pay for this horse?

gelding, aged 9, 16.16hh, thoroughbred who raced briefly but has been fully retrained. Spent the last year doing general riding club activities and is a generally really lovely horse.

-perfect stable manners, could lead without a rope tbh, would stand for hours to get groomed
-loves hacking alone and in company, occasionally needs gentle encouragement when alone but isn’t nappy or spooky or a bolter or anything like that
-loves XC, has cleared fences of BE80 and enjoys it (never competed though but did XC regularly as the yard 2 mins up the road had a full course used for training and competition so we can go whenever)
-happy to school, happy to jump a course of jumps
-no fancy dressage moves yet and not really working in an outline
-loves a gallop but is always safe- can even go for a gallop bareback lol and ALWAYS has brakes
-generally in good health and flew threw a 5 stage vetting 1 year ago although he coliced over this summer and spent 10 days in the equine centre but recovered without any surgery or long term implications
-good to clip, good for the farrier, no vices, no rears/bucks, absolutely not a nasty bone in his body
-would make a great novice horse although he is a tb so I know that puts people off

just wondered what people would consider a reasonable price? He’s the ideal horse in every way but his colic history and the fact he’s a thoroughbred obviously affects things. TYSM in advance.

He’s generally a very easy going horse- never any problems, never any issues, very much the kind of horse you could trust to keep your gran safe

I would expect a horse like that to be around £8000 ish.

catgirl1976 · 21/11/2023 21:48

4 - 6k depending where you are and assuming he’s sound

Lizzt2007 · 21/11/2023 21:49

I'm not sure op, I'm as out of touch as you, but I'd suggest moving this to 'the tack room' rather than Aibu as you'll likely get much more knowledgable input on that sub.

VisionsOfSplendour · 21/11/2023 21:50

There's a horse topic you know, based on the first 2 suggestions AIBU might not get you the best answers

bucketofshite · 21/11/2023 21:51

Argh- should have included but forgot- he’s the kind of horse you can ride as often or as little as you like. He can go out in the field and not be ridden for weeks and he would safely gallop without being at all hot. Or he’s happy to be ridden full time. He’s completely easy going. I didn’t ride for 3 weeks due to being unwell and I hacked him over open grass moor fields without a saddle or bridle and he was fab

I also think there is a big market for decent horses that can compete at BE 80/90 with a competent amateur rider, something a step up from a safe cob type but not a true competition horse.

cryinglaughing · 21/11/2023 21:53

£7k

Portach · 21/11/2023 21:54

Why are you selling?

Also, as a pp said, get this moved to the Tack Room board.

Croissantsandpistachio · 21/11/2023 21:59

Have a look on the ROR site for lots of ex-racers for sale and do a comparison based on age, ability, etc.

PointyMcguire · 21/11/2023 22:02

£7-8k

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 21/11/2023 22:04

£4/5k depending on stage of retraining- you say fully retrained but not competed, and no fancy dressage- not sure if that means he still rides above the bridle and strung out, or he just hasn’t cracked his half pass in canter yet.

He’s safe and kind which is valuable, but hw has no record to prove his talent, and he’s an ex racer, and as a gelding has no breeding value so those things detract.

Horriblewoman · 21/11/2023 22:05

He sounds amazing, I’d snap him up. I’m London-based but 8k sounds incredibly reasonable if he truly is as easy as you say.

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 21/11/2023 22:05

Also- where are you?! You’ll get more in Surrey than you might in Hull.

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 21/11/2023 22:06

Final
thought- if he’s been out at riding club in group sessions and is recognised/would get RC a references then closer to £7/8k!

How did you ride without a saddle OR bridle???

What did you use? Telepathy??

Seriously he sounds lush but I have no idea about horse prices now either. Good luck.

bucketofshite · 21/11/2023 22:13

Oh great idea about the tack room I’ll get it moved over! Thanks!

Haha. To be fair it’s his normal route as it’s part of our grounds so he’s used to the tracks now! I originally sat on him for a 5 minute walk and then thought fuck it let’s go for a hack! Not the brightest idea I’ve had haha but thankfully it was all fine. He just walked his usual route and was loving it (and part of the route involves a track that we use to gallop when the weather is good but he didn’t once try to even trot, he was just happy going for a nice walk lol)

Oh thank you! Unfortunately not, i just meant we’ve done riding club type activities and general riding but we haven’t actually done any proper riding club or shows etc unfortunately x

ahh he sounds fab! What a dude 🙂

bucketofshite · 21/11/2023 22:17

Only selling as I’m giving up riding for good (hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but I know it’s the right thing to do)

It's a long time since I have worked with horses so I can not advise on the price , your location would make a difference too.
But to be honest with all those positive traits and no mention of any negative I would wonder how honest the seller is.

Also agree with pp , get this moved to 'the tack room' by clicking on the 3 dots on your 1st post then leave a message asked the thread to be moved

bucketofshite · 21/11/2023 22:19

when I got him I promised myself I’d never sell him or make a penny off him, so I’ll be donating the money to the racehorse charity anyway because I don’t want to make a penny of profit off my best friend and the sale isn’t financially motivated. I just had no clue where to even start price wise! It used to be tbs were less than a grand and then over Covid I saw them on fb selling for 10k !! So hard to keep up with it all it changes so much

OP posts:
MissDaisyDot · 21/11/2023 22:21

Oh yeah I would be too, 100%. I suppose I genuinely can’t think of any other than the slight few I’ve mentioned - the colic history might be off putting, and the fact he’s only got fairly basic schooling. Safe and sound and fun but nothing flashy. And the fact he’s a TB so will be an automatic no to lots of people. I honestly have wracked my brains and can’t think of anything else wrong with him though!
