I've been reading an article about fast fashion, how clothing in the UK hasn't risen with inflation over the past few decades due to outsourcing and cheaper fabrics, etc etc. I understand this as I bought a long wool coat from Topshop in 1997 that cost me £100. It wouldn't be wool now though, but almost as pricey!
But I do struggle to find a decent, modest set of clothes at a price that feels reasonable in the current market. I am of the mind that buying less but better is the way, but whenever I find 'better' it is often around and above £400.
Let's take cashmere knits fro example. Most people say the £200 version from a mid range brand like White Company age badly and are poor quality. But a step upwards (Johnstons of Elgin or Brora) are double the price for a decent knit. I dare say this reflects true inflation, and the fairer sourcing/working standards (one hopes!).
AIBU to think not all of these very expensive items are with their pricetag? Some of them are very trend focused so will definitely 'age'. I am at the point where I need a few new knits for winter as my older ones are tired or no longer useful. I don't want to pay £100 for something at H&M, but don't want to drop a grand on Brora either!
