All the packing for a weekend away

Partner takes so much stuff with him on weekends away in UK. The kids are 9.

He stuffs extra jackets/shoes in at the last minute plus he takes 2 huge bags of his own stuff. If I ask him, he needs it all just in case.

AIBU? I don't know why I find it so overwhelming, esp on the journey home when the car is piled high and it will all be tipped out next to the washing machine. I know kids need a fair amount of things wherever they go...

Makes me want to take a pair of leggings and two tops for the whole time😂

He's reluctant to throw away old/outgrown things at home.

Any coping tips?

do you go away often?

what is he like on abroad holiday on longer uk?

Notjustfish · 20/11/2023 16:17

Can you write a packing list together?

LubaLuca · 20/11/2023 16:18

I suppose if you're in the car, there's no harm in sticking another coat in just in case. I can travel light on planes and trains, but not when I have the luxury of a car to fill.

As for the stuff being dumped by the washing machine, tell him not to do that. He can put it in the laundry basket until he's ready to wash it.

Make a packing list - but also tick against the mist as to what was actually used
Depends where you go - if some unfortunate situation arise where he ran out of undies/ socks etc is he able to replace

Di the same with the kids - what did you take, what did you use?
Assume another layer for weather changes and start leaving stuff at home

Clothes he won’t throw out - place in a bin bag and hide - see how long it is till he looks for it

Partner is the same and I couldn't care less. I pack light and let him deal with his own crap which includes washing and unpacking. You would probably do well not to think that "kids need a fair amount". Most kids would be fine with the exact same amount of things as an adult. When we go away, we have minimal change of clothes, especially if we go camping (we just re-wear the same clothes, and take fresh socks and underwear) or somewhere where there is access to a washing machine. Dad is the only one who has a massive suitcase and, as I said, it is his to take care of.

I tell my H to put his stuff on the bed, then I pack what he really needs. Otherwise it would be 14 pairs of socks, he would only ever wear 1 pair to come home. 15 of pants, in case he has an accident 🙄. 7 pairs of jeans, he wears shorts the whole time. He could never decide on how many shirts & T shirts so he’d take extra just in case … Most of the stuff would never be worn.

For a weekend I’d just take jeans & a few tops, or a couple of dresses in summer.

Many of us pack as though we have constant and explosive diarrhoea

glimmer82 · 20/11/2023 16:37

Haha so true. We are only going 1 hour away.

Im afraid I am woefully like your partner.
Packing really stresses me out and I always overdo it.

A weekend away would be 7 pairs of pants for 2 nights and a week away, I'll just tip my entire underwear drawer into a bag pretty much.

Always been like it, think its because I moved around a lot as a kid.

glimmer82 · 21/11/2023 12:44

I understand that verv. It's a pain.

idealgift We camp twice in the summer and a relative's place several weekends a year. Better abroad as there are luggage limits.

I know sometimes you do need a back up for things.

He wants to pack his own stuff so as you say, I'll pack light and let him do his own thing (including the washing).
