Absolutely freaking out! Anyone else experience this? Will pest control come tonight or do I have to wait until tomo 😱

There’s no need to panic. Obviously you don’t want them in your house but they’re just a small rodent. Think of them as squirrels with shaved tails! Get pest control in and sort it out but there’s no need for drama.

Peterrainbow · 15/11/2023 20:11

Do they ever come back after you’ve solved it?

Of course it’s possible and, if it happens, you get pest control in again.

Do you suffer from musophobia? My sympathies if you do but otherwise this isn’t really a big deal, particularly if you get it sorted swiftly. I imagine most people will have to deal with similar at least once.

Peterrainbow · 15/11/2023 20:29

@GuessItsANameChange erm no I’ve never come across anyone else in rl who has had such a problem!!

They probably just haven’t brought it up. Mice/rats/squirrels in the loft (or elsewhere in the house) are a common issue.

mindutopia · 15/11/2023 20:50

Just chuck a load of rat poison through the hatch. We have to do it about twice a year. Live on a farm, so maybe it’s just a more normal thing, but sorts them out in about 2 days and then no more. We’ve never had any issues with smells after, but we don’t go up and poke around up there either.

User1274838 · 15/11/2023 20:51

They can run up walls you ding bat

MonumentalLentil · 15/11/2023 20:56

Don't chuck poison down, irresponsible use of poison kills other wildlife and sometimes pets. Rats eat it, go outside, die, get eaten by something else, owls and other birds especially.

Get a bait box for the poison or an electric zapper box.

Both the hedgehogs I was feeding were poisoned this year by someone chucking rat killer about, if you have ever seen a creature writhing in agony after being poisoned you will never forget it.

Lovemusic82 · 15/11/2023 21:01

Get some of the rat poison blocks ‘big cheese’ from Amazon, lob a couple into the loft. I have had mice in the roof, at the moment I have starlings in there and the are noisy f#ckers.

I keep telling this to one of mine but she still insists she needs to be scooped up and placed on the sofa.

cryinglaughing · 15/11/2023 21:04

We had the council out.
He brought a cricket bat with him and spent many an afternoon bashing away at them.
8 years on, they haven't returned into the house but they are outside. We live rurally, it's just one of those things.

Peterrainbow · 15/11/2023 21:07

@cryinglaughing oh yuk that is full on

Check any air bricks at ground level. We found ours had grilles made of plastic. Rats had chewed through it to get in. We had them all replaced with air bricks with metal grilles. It wasn't as expensive as it sounds.

@cryinglaughing oh yuk that is full on

It wasn't pleasant.
There were over 20 in total, sleeping was a challenge, it sounded like they had clogs on!

MrsMitford3 · 15/11/2023 21:11

Where are you @Peterrainbow

not your actual address but part of country

I live near the Thames and rats are everywhere!!!!!
We have a great Rat Guy though-thank goodness

VeryGoodVeryNice · 15/11/2023 21:12

What you need is a cat called Alan who chooses to spend pretty much his whole life sat in the loft 🤷‍♀️. This is him yesterday.

Pest Interceptors on YouTube are worth a look for tips about what to do. They have a video about lofts.

We have had rat holes in our garden for years. It's horrible. Cannot get rid of them. Following for any tips. I think it must be a drain somewhere but don't know how to locate it. Council are useless.

sandyhappypeople · 15/11/2023 21:17

We had a rat under out dining room extension, we could hear it scratting around sporadically for about 2 years and didn't really worry about it, but then one day it figured out how to get up the cavity wall to the bathroom, and got in the house, we only realised when DH opened the bin (one of those built in cupboard pull out jobbies) and it was sat in the top of the fucking bin!

We didn't poison because we have dogs so we put traps down and couldn't catch the little bastard, one day I was sat in the living room feeding our 6 month old and it ran out from under the sofa to under the TV unit in the corner, I called DH into the room and we quietly blocked off everywhere but the tv unit and armed ourselves, DH with a bucket and I'd got baby in one arm and a dog ball flinger in the other to try and poke it out.. it was a bloody farce, I poked at it, it ran out, around then back under the unit, we did it about 4-5 times, as DH just wasn't quick enough with the bucket.. one of the dogs who had been watching this go on with little interest for a good 15 minutes, decided enough was enough of us pratting about and next time it ran out, he jumped in, grabbed it and ran outside with it where he swiftly despatched it.. good dog!

I'd get pest control in before it gets any worse, I would imagine from the loft they could get anywhere in the house, we found droppings all around the edge of the bedrooms where it had obviously been exploring before we even knew it was in the house!

MegaClutterSlut · 15/11/2023 21:28

I have a rat under my floor boards which it has chewed holes in to get in the house. I only found out we had a rat when it ran up me whilst I was sleeping downstairs due to dhs snoring. Posted a pic on another rat thread

Pest control first came out a week ago to lay poison. She checked bait boxes today and it hasn't touched it so she's laid more down the holes. I still hear it occasionally trying to chew its way back in. I hate it 😭

Pippim · 15/11/2023 21:51

Glad I'm not alone as I'm ready to nuke the house.
Lived here 30 years and never found out how they get in. We're on the edge of fields so obviously plenty around outside, just wish they'd stay there.
One pest man said that rats leave some kind of scent that lasts 7 years and tells other rats this is a good place to go.

Our council no longer do any pest control. I have my pest control man on speed dial.

@Gloriousgardener11 how did you find out where they were getting in.

TheGreatHat · 15/11/2023 21:59

My pest control guy put uv powder in the loft that they track through to see where they came up.

Titsywoo · 15/11/2023 22:08

We have this at the moment. We had it before and dealt with it ourselves by filling any entry points with wire wool. They are back now so I am emptying the loft soon (to have a clear out as so we can check everything) and we will refill any entry points. It is grim but can often be dealt with yourself - you can buy bait boxes too - you don't necessarily need to spend megabucks on a contractor.

StarDolphins · 15/11/2023 22:13

I had them in my loft yeT before last. They dug a tunnel under my flagged patio & went through the wall cavity, finding a way to the loft.

Pest control came & put traps down outside & came to check for 2weeks after. They had taken the poison & the noise just stopped so we then blocked the entrance tunnel up.

Gloriousgardener11 · 15/11/2023 22:14

We paid for cameras down the drains and showed up the broken pipe and some droppings around the area.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 15/11/2023 22:16

Having done a full renovation and blocked up every know hole and gap, we've been super annoyed to get rats this month. Goodness knows how they got in. Hate the idea of poison but I hate the idea of us dying in an electrical house fire started by rats chewing wires so 🤷 four visits from rat man seem to have solved problem for now....but anticipate it'll be an ongoing problem as we're near a river
