To tell my hairdresser I have nits?

I am absolutely mortified. I went to the hairdresser on Saturday for a cut and blow dry. On Sunday, I noticed that my daughter had head lice in her hair, so I checked my other daughter and found that she had them too. Worried that I might have them as well, I checked my own hair and, to my dismay, discovered that I had lice too! Thankfully, I had some treatment shampoo on hand, so I treated all of us, including my husband. We're all sorted now, but I can't stop thinking about the hairdresser. I must have had the lice in my hair when I went to the salon. Do you think she didn't notice? Or do you think she did notice but didn't say anything? Should I let her know? I would be so embarrassed if I had to call and tell her.

I am sure if she noticed she would have told you. Why on earth would you phone and tell her now?! No way!!

TolkiensFallow · 14/11/2023 21:04

They generally sling you out if they notice.

Changingplace · 14/11/2023 21:04

If you’d had them when you were at the salon she definitely would’ve noticed.

Darthwazette · 14/11/2023 21:05

I think if she had noticed she would have terminated your appointment.

snackermuncher · 14/11/2023 21:11

So you think she didn't notice? I'm praying that's the case.

I've been going to her for years, she knows me well. I worry that's she did see them, but didn't want to embarrass me?

If she did see them then all embarrassment aside she should have told you straight away and then sanitised her gown towel scissors comb or brushes etc.

If she didn't see them id want to know how because it's a close up job so would have noticed when sectioning hair.

Perhaps you didn't have them at that time op

Teacherteachernotapreacher · 14/11/2023 21:16

Maybe they’d not hatched then and you didn’t have many eggs?
otherwise, regardless of your friendship with her, she’d have stopped and sterilised everything. And asked you to come back.

Pancakeorcrepe · 14/11/2023 21:17

Maybe you didn’t have them at the time? Do not worry about this any further. The hairdresser will have done their usual hygiene routine and sanitised everything anyway.

stepintochristmas1 · 14/11/2023 21:18

Hairdresser would have told you to sling your hook if you had had them then , seen it happen once when I took my child to get his hair cut . Quite mortifying for the customer then because all the customers waiting had seen the whole episode .

snackermuncher · 14/11/2023 21:18

@dothehokeycokey maybe I didn't have them at the time of the appointment, but when I checked (less than 24hrs later) I had quite a lot of lice and plenty of eggs too. Thinking back, I also felt a bit itchy since about Thurs/Fri.

God, I hate the thought of her knowing but not saying.

@snackermuncher

I'd be concerned about her hygiene standards within her salon if that's the case.

The last time I saw a hairdresser sanitise brushes and combs between uses was about 25 years ago, when they kept them in jars of sterilising fluid. That aside, stop worrying OP, she knows you don't usually have them, and you won't have them when you you go back.

Just asked my daughter who is a stylist as she said that if they had seen any evidence at the appointment they would have quietly let you know, stopped the service and the station and equipment would have been deep cleaned and the stylist would have treated themselves. All of her equipment is cleaned regularly so they would have noticed before the next client and you would have been informed. You don't need to do anything and don't worry xx

This.

Plus, you are not all sorted, please keep combing for the next 14 days. So many people don't seem to realize that a treatment doesn't mean that's the end of it...

Sorry if you already know

Bouncyball23 · 14/11/2023 22:54

Not all sorted dont forget 2nd treatment In 7 days lotion doesn't always kill the eggs.

beautifulbrothers · 14/11/2023 23:58

I had the same happen to me when I was a teenager. I was getting my hair done for prom and (as far as I can remember) the stylist quietly told my parent and I still got my hair done. I'm mortified to this day OP but we all know it can happen, especially when you have children.

I would really recommend wet combing as the only reliable method to eradicate lice and nits. If you go on the NHS website, there's a link to a charity that sell a wet combing kit. It's fantastic and no more lotions required!

I would just message her and say when you got home you noticed the children had nits and although you don't think you had them you were just letting her know incase you did. That's how i would play it, this way your not worrying about incase she knew and didn't tell you so its not awkward
