To go to the GP about sudden random giant bruises?

Just in the past week I've got 4 big dark purple bruises on my legs out of nowhere! Two are in between the size of a tangerine and a £2 coin. One is a bit smaller than that. The smallest is like blueberry size.

No recent change in lifestyle...I'm on sertraline and I take collagen, vitD, B complex, resveratrol, inositol, and probiotics as supplements. No other symptoms. Not sleeping well and not much of an appetite but not to the extent of seeming wildly out of the ordinary.

Is this something to go to a GP about or not??

Yes, get it checked. Unexplained dark bruises could indicate something like anaemia.
If you’re certain you’ve not injured yourself you need to get your bloods checked.

@LegoVsFoot oh my goodness yes! It's not a sign of anaemia but rather a sign potentially of low platelets (clotting). Get the dr to run some bloods.

bellac11 · 14/11/2023 19:49

Yes can be a sign of clotting issues, I know someone with this

Thromble · 14/11/2023 19:51

Speaking as a nurse, yes.

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/11/2023 19:52

Yes, definitely something that needs to be checked

UpUpUpU · 14/11/2023 19:54

Definitely get yourself checked

Straycatblue · 14/11/2023 20:07

Yes go to GP
It could be any number of things
You are also on sertraline which in itself carries possibility of an increased bleeding risk

Frightenedbunny · 14/11/2023 20:08

Yes for sure!

Unexplained bruising is a symptom that should always be discussed with a GP, who should commission blood test (including Full Blood Count).

Especially if you have other symptoms such as other bleeding (nosebleeds, gums, heavier periods), fatigue, unintended weight loss, night sweats, breathlessness, aching joints/bones

LegoVsFoot · 14/11/2023 20:25

OK thanks!
I have 3 kids and feel like I'm always calling so would be a bit embarrassed to call again - but ofc will if necessary.
Just read guidance on sertraline which says immediately contact GP for bruising/bleeding, which is listed as a rare and severe side effect. Will call tomorrow

Absolutely. My DD went to the GP due to unexplained bruising and ended up spending 2 months in hospital due to ITP.

GP bread and butter. Sertraline can cause bruising esp mixed with the concoction of herbal stuff you're taking. Do you need it all??

Ladyj84 · 14/11/2023 20:43

Sertraline I've had years of bruises haha sometimes I look like I've had my arms beaten up. My Dr said sertraline made it happen at the time I asked a few years back

Ok thanks! Had never heard of this. Your GP wasn’t concerned and you were able to stay on it?
