(no googling 😀) Do you know what a Sara Stedy is ?

LolaCrapola · 14/11/2023 19:11

Yes. But that’s because I am an OT and could ‘prescribe’ one!

pinacollama · 14/11/2023 19:11

I’m a neuro speech therapist…I think it’s to help with transfers but not 100%!

MegCleary · 14/11/2023 19:11

Yep

anybloodyname · 14/11/2023 19:15

Yep .. but don't t need one yet 😂

Lammveg · 14/11/2023 19:16

Yes and my favourite piece of equipment

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 14/11/2023 19:17

Yes (ex nurse), used to use on the wards.

SerendipityJane · 14/11/2023 19:17

I only wanted 3 replies.

Gave a friend a lift to have their HRT implant renewed today. As usual I drop them off adn wait for a call to pick them up whilst coffeeing it.

They were a bit longer than usual today. Despite being seen bang on time.

They use a wheelchair and cannot transfer unaided. The delay was because 2 HCPs in the hospital had "never heard" of a Sara Stedy. Their only recourse was to dragoon a younger HCP (so 3 in total) to do the old manual heave-ho.

Obviously my friend was upset and confused by this.

I have said I will accompany them next time. Somehow I sadly believe the outcome will be miraculously different.

Thanks for your replies - you've won me a bet.

Tended to just call it ‘the Stedy’ though

2023forme · 14/11/2023 19:18

Yes because I’ve used them frequently at work.

TheOnlyMatriarchThereIs · 14/11/2023 19:21

No.

Paediatric nurse though, might that be why?

2023forme · 14/11/2023 19:23

Sorry @SerendipityJane I’m not sure what you mean? Two HCPs had never heard of a Sara Stedy - do you mean they didn’t know how to work one? Did your friend ask them to use one but they didn’t know what is was??

Tiredmum100 · 14/11/2023 19:24

Yes, I'm a nurse, and we use them frequently.

Glassesherewecome · 14/11/2023 19:25

Only know because my mum used one, hadn't heard of it at work (clinical but not staff)

RapidlyApproachingEndOfMyTether · 14/11/2023 19:26

I know what one is but I wouldn't be competent to use one and it's not a bit of kit I encounter routinely and using one isn't part of my job role. (Registered Nurse)

MichelleScarn · 14/11/2023 19:28

Yes, know what a stedy is. What role are the hcp you're talking about?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 14/11/2023 19:29

Yes, even though I worked in paeds. I worked in a hospice and some of our older teens needed a Stedy for transfers.

More recently I used one with DH.

PostItInABook · 14/11/2023 19:30

Paramedic - not a scooby. What is it?

volunteersruz · 14/11/2023 19:30

i was a manual handling trainer as part of my role and no, i've never heard it called that, it would be a sit-stand device or perhaps possibly an Arjo anywhere i ever worked!

daliesque · 14/11/2023 19:30

Oncologist - our nurses use them all the time.

tokesqueen · 14/11/2023 19:31

Yes. One lovely old man used to say 'Here she is. The beautiful Sara' whenever she appeared 😁

dogscatsandbabies · 14/11/2023 19:32

Yep.

If she was going to an OP dept for an appointment I wouldn't be that surprised if those staff were unaware of all the transfer aids. And, depending on how close OP buildings are to IP wards, not likely to be able to lay their hands on one.

Believerinbiology · 14/11/2023 19:33

Yes but it's a particular brand name so if a different type is in use in their organisation they may not recognise the "brand name" but would know if the generic name was used. I admit I looked questioningly at a colleague when they referred to such a device by a different brand name I was unfamiliar with.

Pruntysisters · 14/11/2023 19:33

These things cost a fortune and usually found on wards rather than an OP setting.

Most HCP would recognise one as we have manual handling training. They’re not always referred to by that name.

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 14/11/2023 19:34

You learn how to use them in your yearly mandatory-moving and handling training.
Were they nurse's? I hope not.

volunteersruz · 14/11/2023 19:35

p.s. if shes going in again she needs to ask for a stand aid - the sara steady is a brand type and only 1 type of many so it totally depends what equipment is procured/used in that particular department.
