"Coverstar" - safe for kids?

Thestreets · 14/11/2023 16:50

Shamelessly posting for traffic. DD10 has came home from school asking to download coverstar.

Does anybody have experience or know how safe this is for kids? It's advertised as tik tok alternative that's safe for children. No DM allowed and screened for bullying, inappropriate language etc. Not many reviews available online.

Bumping for you as my DD (9) has just asked me the same.

Choconuts · 03/02/2024 13:39

@Thestreets Did you manage to find out much about the app?

My DD10 friends all have it but I don't want DD posting videos (esp ones we don't agree to first) as she is very shy and can be quite anxious.

Am I out of touch or do all yr5 girls post videos of themselves now? Or have her friends downloaded this without their parents realising what it is - in that case does it warrant a message on the group WhatsApp or would that make me one of those mums?

Bumping and I have a specific question I can’t find the answer to…is there anyway to prevent a follower from sharing content? My daughter’s profile is locked down so only followers we approve can see anything but before we allow her to post I want to know if we can limit her followers’ actions to just liking and commenting. I do not want them to be able to share her content. As lovely as her friends are they do not have the same level of supervision or caution as my daughter and appear to be able to share content wherever they see fit. Here’s hoping! 🤞

Bumping this as the app seems to be growing in popularity. Anyone willing to report on their experiences with it?

Invertedsnob · 24/06/2024 08:17

I emailed the app and received no response so I ended up deleting it. 🤷‍♀️

Buryyiirwhat · 24/06/2024 08:49

We deleted it because it’s still an upload on line thing and cannot be locked down. Nothing like this is sm100% safe and quite honestly I don’t want DD making videos of herself ‘performing’ for likes etc.
It’s not healthy IMHO and these videos can easily ne shared, mocked or ignored …

This is why we deleted it. Plus DD promised she wouldn’t share or upload but did, because - what else is the point of it otherwise???
It’s just another app making money off kids content and advertising.

Some parents just don’t see the harm and fall for the ‘everyone does it’ line!
Dome of DCs friends have parents who are very sensible people but still have let their kids have unfettered access to SM or have a TikTok upload accounts or YouTube channels…
DD downloaded it and had to ask us to allow it but said it was a music thing where she could copy performance - sort of true- so we said okay. Checking a few weeks later Inrealsied she could up load and share and despite it only being her friends - she had loads of likes from strangers too ‘friends of friends’ etc…

Buryyiirwhat · 24/06/2024 09:58

The other thing to remember is that the ‘ Tiktok
for kids’ and ‘safe social media’ claims are from the marketing of Coverstar themselves!

THEY are the one declaring it’s safe for young children and that there is ‘zero’ bullying in the APP which patently isn’t true…

Invertedsnob · 24/06/2024 10:55

…and can’t reply to a genuine enquiry from a parent so yep I agree.

Buryyiirwhat · 24/06/2024 16:25

It’s not in their interest to reply and show that actually it isn’t ‘safe’ for children to use because it’s still children uploading themselves ‘performing’ to the internet, and that will NEVER be a completely safe thing to do.
From the danger of bullying or mocking, or the culture of needing validation from others, or the danger of grooming and catfishing.

TickingKey46 · 13/01/2025 23:11

My 12 year old has been asking about this. I've tried looking it up etc but still dont really get what it's all about?
Also the claims that it's safe and no bullying? How's that even possible? What do they do to ensure this is the case?
Can someone please fill me in.
Thank you

Sophie2584 · 25/04/2025 10:21

Im just looking into it myself for my yr 5 will report back once downloaded and checked

Turnipmoon · 02/07/2025 22:35

My 12 year old has just asked for it. We are in middle England UK. It seems its what they're all asking for right now. I will decline on the basis thst I don't want her images on the net for predators to see. She can speak to her friends and do those things on what's app
