AIBU to let 4 year old wear a coat in the car?

I've never let DS wear a coat in the carseat as I'm aware that it can reduce impact protection in a crash. Ds has now outgrown his 0-4 seat so just bought the Cybex Solution T I-fix which doesn't have a harness and you buckle them with a normal seatbelt (secured tightly through the anchor points).

Is it now safe to assume that, since he's not using a harness type belt, that DS (who is 4.5 y/o) is safe to wear his coat?

YABU - it's still not safe
YANBU - coats are fine in this type of car seat.

TIA

It’s still not safe, nobody is supposed to wear a bulky coat with a seat belt on, it affects the fit and safety.

In theory no one should wear a padded coat or anything like that in a car. The belt should sit as close to your body as possible otherwise it might not be 'fitted' correctly and might slide off upon impact rather than tensioning and applying pressure correctly. I always wear my winter coat open when I'm in the car for this reason.

To be safe, no.coats should be worn in the car by anyone. In practice I would wear a thin coat myself. I wouldn't put a normal winter coat on a child in the car

Safety aside (I believe it’s not safe) I’d never wear a coat in the car as it’s just so bulky, restrictive and uncomfortable! Not to mention the overheating aspect.

Thank you for the responses! I didn't realise it was all coats - not just babies/children in carseats. I'll definitely continue as we are even if it's a bit of extra faff. Thanks all 👍🏻

I have fleecy blankets In the car and put these over them instead once they are seat belted in. So the security of the seat isn't compromised

Ideally take the coat off. A compromise is to open the zip of the coat and run the belt through the front so it's in contact with her body. But if it's getting in the way of the belt routing at all, best to take it off completely.
