Microgynon has been awful for me. Yasmin even worse.

Any more suggestions?

The other thing to consider re side effects is how you take the pill. I avoided combined pills for a while because I get hormonal headaches (tension headaches but they can be quite debilitatating) and this is purportedly due to the fluctuations in oestrogen levels from combined pills.

However after going through all the options for progesterone only, I went back to a combined pill but take it 3 packs in a row with one 4 day break (instead of 7). Keeps oestrogen levels more stable, and the break is just enough to avoid having issues with intermittent bleeding (which is a common side effect of running packets back to back)

Combined pill gave me migraine auras.

Switched to POP. Cerazette was fine. Swapped to Cerelle due to issues with getting it. Nasty cystic acne.

Now on Noriday and having zero problems with it.

I've been on microgynon for 20 years and never had a single issue. No side effects at all, apart from being a bit emotional about 3 days before the end of a pack 🤣. Everyone reacts differently.

LexieLoos · 14/11/2023 22:50

I was on Cilest for years and it was great - had a baby and then they discontinued it!
They gave me the alternative but that was horrific, so now I use Cilique, and haven't had any issues

fixies · 15/11/2023 00:14

Another vote for old trusty microgynon. By far the best.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 15/11/2023 00:16

Another one here for Yasmin. But Pps are right and the great thing about the Pill is it takes a few days or a week to tell if it’s right for you, not bloody months as with ADs.

Linnet · 15/11/2023 01:02

I was on microgynon for years and it was great, I had no problems at all. Then they gave me rigevidon, I guess because it was cheaper and It was awful made me cry all the time. I now get desogestrol and I have no problems with that at all.

hoobanoobie · 15/11/2023 01:05

I used to get a brand name prescription but for a year or so now it's just Desogestrel when I pick up my prescription from the pharmacy. Stopped my periods, no side effects. I’m happy!

CheeseCrackers45 · 15/11/2023 01:21

I had to give up on hormonal contraception as every single one gave me horrible side effects (mini pill and implant both made me bleed constantly for months, Yasmin gave me horrific migraines, patch gave me horrible mood swings, you get the picture). Got the copper coil instead and absolutely love it and would recommend it. No side effects at all apart from periods last a bit longer. Insertion was almost painless.

endoflevelbaddy · 15/11/2023 01:28

Yasmin, been on it around 20years (apart from breaks to have DCs) and had no side effects. I'm" 42 & happily still being prescribed it without issue. Used to be one of the more expensive options so would be asked a switching at every review, but that's not come up for the last 5 years or so.
Was on microgynon for 5-6 years as a teen, started giving me headaches, then went through maybe 3 different options, all with issues until settled on Yasmin.

Had a progesterone only pill while breastfeeding DC1 which was fine in terms of side effects but surprise random period put me off staying on long term.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 15/11/2023 02:39

Someone’s probably mentioned this already but you have to have your blood pressure monitored on Yasmin - increased risk of clots and high BP.

Pinkbonbon · 15/11/2023 02:55

If i could go back in time I'd have my tubes tied instead.

Both microgynon and ridgevedeon were fine for me until after a decade I started getting headaches.

But I still wish I hadn't put that shit in my system for years.

I don't want kids and recon I should get my tubes snipped but now I'm 34 I'm like...is it even worth the hassle anymore?

I get that lots of ppl want kids but let's be honest, many...probably the majority infact, of people who have them, probably shouldn't have. For a gazillion differing reasons.

So I do think more women should consider perminant sterilisation. The side effects are minimal (as the ovaries remain) and you're not putting shite into your body for years that shouldn't be in your body.

Better still - he gets the snip instead lol.

MariaVT65 · 15/11/2023 02:58

Just fyi op, microgynom, rigivedon and ovranette are all the same thing, just different brands. I’ve been on all 3 depending on where i’ve moved to in the country and been absolutely fine. I believe it’s trial and error for each person.

Nat6999 · 15/11/2023 04:12

Microgynon was brilliant for me, I took it back to back for years so I didn't have withdrawal bleeds.

AussieManque · 15/11/2023 04:25

Femodene was great for me, I was on for 15+ years. However, coming off it led to huge hair loss, similar to post-partum hairloss. Something to be aware of.

LuckyCats · 15/11/2023 04:26

“Better still - he gets the snip instead”
might be good advice if you are only taking the pill as a contraceptive, which is admittedly it’s main purpose.
I’ve got an implant which stops my periods and hormonal migraines, I will carry on having it unfil
im
in menopause, regardless of what my partner does or doesn’t do.

dhworry · 15/11/2023 04:55

I found condoms had the best impact on my hormones.

I do wonder if men would routinely take a tablet with side effects as contraceptive

Hankunamatata · 13/11/2023 14:44

Marvelon

This both for me and Dd, we probrably weigh 1KG more than off it. But have beautiful skin and hair.

I have stopped at 47 ( nearly 48) as I am scared of blood clots.

Mariposa123 · 15/11/2023 06:49

I took Yasmin and rigivedon for years pre kids with no side effects at all. Then got given cerazette while bf and that was horrific for me - mood swings; random, long periods of heavy bleeding and then when that wasn’t going on I completely dried up. I’ve come off taking anything completely now until I finish bf.
