Hospital rant - AIBU that this is not acceptable

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 00:39

DC has a life threatening illness that requires 24 hour care - daily iV and iV meds as well as other meds.
we were admitted to hospital Friday night and it’s now sunday Night so on our third night.
we are STILL waiting for her medications to be prescribed - her daily usual medications.
I have chased and chased. Nurse has just come in to say that it now won’t be done again tonight.
AIBU that this is ridiculous ?

That is inexplicable. Have you contacted PALs? Or are they not available at weekend.

Ponoka7 · 13/11/2023 00:41

Do you have them at home? PALS and the ward manager in the morning.

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 00:43

I have them but not allowed to give them without them being prescribed

FGS shape up and tell the nurse you are giving as they haven't got them prescribed. If there's any nonsense say you wish to speak with the person presently in charge of the hospital.

Iamasentientoctopus · 13/11/2023 00:47

It’s a complete joke! I’m a hospital mum too and I NEVER surrender her drugs now. They just can’t get their acts together to give them on time. I’ve phoned PALS from the hospital bedside before and told them I’m not handing my drugs over until they can produce their own.

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 00:49

@RosesAndHellebores i have them yes, but they are iV meds and she is attached to their iV pumps.
I can’t just give them without them being prescribed but thanks I will be sure to shape up.

Bring them in from home. They usually tell you to bring prescribed medication in with you.

FannyFifer · 13/11/2023 00:51

Didn't realise were IV meds.

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 00:53

I have her meds but I did say in my opening post they are IV. They need to be prescribed before any nurse can give them and I am not even allowed to touch their IV pump as it’s not the same as ours.

That's awful but unsurprising. You have to watch them like a hawk, which is a horrible responsibility when you're stressed and/or unwell.

I have recently given birth, and they kept hashing up my medication - medication I only needed because they didn't give me preventative treatment I should have been prescribed.

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 00:54

@FannyFifer even non IV meds being bought in from home are not allowed here to be kept at bedside or given without being prescribed.

It’s going to be a difficult winter!

Have you been seen by a paediatrician? Or are you still in ED awaiting a bed ?

I think you should keep asking. Ask to speak to the Dr looking after your daughter.

SleepyRich · 13/11/2023 01:40

Tricky to comment without knowing what the meds are, but on balance I agree either they should have been prescribed to continue normal dosing, or if there's an interaction with medications being given in hospital/reason to with hold that the Doctors are concerned about that should have been explained to you. I wonder if it's something quite specialist and there's little information about how it could affect the current illness/interactions causing a pause/decision to monitor whilst withholding... But obviously if this is the case it should be explained.

For the daft ones suggesting to just give it anyway instances where this has occurred in the past have significantly contributed to child deaths in the past and this is why all medications come under the control of hospital team.

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 01:42

@Saltyswee no we have been on the ward for the last 2 nights and tonight
and we are in our specialist hospital where her meds are prescribed from.
they just keep saying “ they are backlogged “

Sorry but your dd is not the only one in the hospital, other patients need seeing too as well.
The nurse is quite right in what she is saying. She is legally not allowed to give any drugs out without it being prescribed.

MariaLuna · 13/11/2023 01:51

NHS is broken OP.

Sorry you are going through this.

I'm in a country where I pay for treatment, monthly, even if I do not use it.

Much better because I get treated at the first available date. (6 weeks).

NHS is great. But nothing in life is free. It's an outdated system. Not fit for the 21st Century.

Bournetilly · 13/11/2023 01:52

This is awful! I’ve worked in a hospital for years and never known this. One missed dose maybe but not a few days. I’d be asking to speak to the matron now/ overnight. If not then the ward manager in the morning and definitely complain to PALS.

Did you miss the part where the OP has said they have been in the ward for TWO DAYS!!!

Two days without medication is not being backlogged its negligence!

Op I would be making a serious fuss. Ask to speak to the doctor in charge. Don't take no for an answer.

MariaLuna · 13/11/2023 01:59

Both of you are right,

Wonder if Labour will fix the problem. doubt it

Hospital is no longer free. Need to pay, going forward.

Clapping for the NHS is pathetic. Doesn't pay the bills.

My late husband was in and out of multiple hospitals through the ‘90s, 00s, and 10s due to several chronic conditions, and sadly this was entirely normal, especially at weekends. You have to question everything, and take a sharp elbowed, assertive middle class approach to get anywhere. Deference and assuming the medical staff know best, or even care, was always doomed. He called an ambulance once, from a hospital, bed, just to get someone’s attention back in the ‘00s! I miss him xx

Tiredandfedup12 · 13/11/2023 05:02

@AngelAurora I am very aware of that but I’m not asking for someone to be present in her room 24/7
I am asking for her routine medications to be prescribed after 2 days of now being cold Turkey off them.

Well, you sound part of the problem.

TheHawkisHowling · 13/11/2023 05:10

No you're not being unreasonable. If I ever go into hospital now, the nurses will have to pry my medications out of my cold dead hands. I always say I don't have them with me. That way, if they happen to miraculously give me a dose that's great, but otherwise I'll just take mine when no one is looking.

That's after a very hard lesson learning that they'll lock them in a drawer next to you and then let you go into withdrawal/severe pain for an interminable period rather than unlock it again.

The NHS fucking sucks.

Yummymummy2020 · 13/11/2023 05:28

Awful standard of care op you are far from unreasonable and what a distressing situation you are in. I second contacting pals and complaining to the ward manager. Take note of every interaction if you can with staff and when things settle, I would issue a formal complaint seperate to chasing the meds now as you are.

Greenberg2 · 13/11/2023 05:37

YANBU.

It's a farcical situation that the hardest place to get your meds is a hospital! Same happened to my friend with pain meds. Also they left three people in a cubicle on chairs while there was a bed free in the middle of the ward. It's almost medieval at times.
