To hate my new sofa..

Basically DH spent nearly £2k on our new sofa as our old sofa was fibre filling and, although very comfy, was looking worn.
It was really comfortable to the point one of us would probably sleep on it each night just as we'd fall asleep watching tv.

New sofa looks similar but is foam filling - I thought it would mean I would save a lot of time not having to neaten the cushions up which was the bane of my life!

New sofa looks lovely but comfort wise isn't a patch on my old scruffy sofa.

Has anyone gone from fibre to foam? Please tell me I'll get used to it 😢

Old vs new sofa (ignore dog and dinosaur)

I had a very similar fibre couch and it was so unbelievably comfy but as you say, lost its shape quickly and just looked tired.
We went for a foam filled couch next and it just wasn’t the same. I did get used to it and I did manage to fall asleep on it ( a lot) but it was never as comfortable as the previous couch.
It was a lot firmer that even after 4 years of us sitting and the dog jumping on it, it still hadn’t lost its shape or firmness.

@Hiddenvoice I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! It's such a shame that they look so tired and to have a sofa that doesn't lose its shape you have to compromise on comfort!
Which sofa would you choose after having both?

I think you’ll get used to it. My mum has a mixture of fibre and foam cushions (not sure why, she only paid for fibre), and we can’t tell the difference any more.

£2k is quite a lot, have prices gone up a lot? We paid £700 in 2016 for a similar size.

Your new one looks so much nicer though!

Ans it’s not a good thing to have a sofa that you fall asleep on. You just miss the end of a TV show and wake up with a sore back!

I think you will get used to it.

If it was just me and my dh then I’d go back to fibre but with kids and a dog, it’s definitely easier having a foam filled couch.
I did get used to it, found my comfy spots and bought some pretty comfy cushions to make my mind believe it was softer than it was 😂

@KingsleyBorder do you think so? That makes me feel better if you think it does at least look better! X

You're brave, letting your DH pick the new sofa!

KingsleyBorder · 13/11/2023 00:36

Miles better!

if you really find it hard to live with there are companies that will make you new cushions. I did that with our quite expensive sofa after about 6 months as the back cushions were down-filled and just too soft, but I am sure they can supply less firm too. I think the ones I got were fibre-wrapped foam. Not that pricy.

The one I used was cushionsupplier.co.uk but there are loads if you Google.

Not helpful but I got a new sofa and HATED it. It was so uncomfortable. I was in a charity shop a week later and sat down for a moment while my friend was looking round. It was so comfy! The staff there joked about bringing me a blanket and a cup of tea. Long story short, I bought the charity shop sofa and they took away my new one to sell in their shop. No regrets. Life is to short to not have a comfy sofa. Count your losses.
