Dog with fleas

calmdoon · 11/11/2023 21:41

For the second time in a few months my dog has fleas.
i think it’s coming from my ex house as my kids say “his cats always crawling with them”
i get a flea treatment from violets I use regularly that sue to come next week but I’ll go and get something tomorrow so I know they won’t last long on the dog. Its the work in the house it’s constantly vacuuming, cleaning, washing down all soft furnishings again and then spraying the house with the killer spray.

my dogs due his treatment next week but I’m going to pets at home tomorrow get the strongest one available. Anybody any recommendations? My poor wee pooch is miserable. And im at the end of my teather cleaning as I feel like my house is infested.

Don’t get one from pets at home at all. There’s flea resistance to all the non prescription products. Go to a vet on Monday and get a proper prescription product. Also use Indorex or acclaim in the house. Hoover incessantly. Hot wash or burn anything the dog lies on. 80% of the fleas live in the environment. Flea life cycle is 3 weeks

From what you've posted, I would expect your children to be bringing fleas in from your ex's house. Firstly, you need to contact your ex and tell them that until he sorts the problem out, he'll no longer be seeing his children. Go to your vet and ask for a flea shampoo for your dog. Tell the vet you believe the fleas to be cat fleas. This may make a difference to any recommended treatment. The vet should also be able to sell you a large can of flea treatment for your carpets and beds. It's not cheap, and it's not nice. It's basically fumigation, and you'll not be able to use any room you've sprayed in for about a day.

I feel your pain, I have two cats and am struggling to get rid of fleas at the moment. Am actually contemplating shaving them I'm so fucked off with it-my house has never been so dusted & hoovered but I still can't seem to be rid of the fuckers. Vets next week I think.

I’m getting the house spray tomorrow as I have strike back spray but think the idorex is better.
kids are 17 & 19 and they go to see dad in their own. I’ve told them I do t want them going to his house or to come to mine if they go there but I can’t stop them. I’m seriously considering phoning rspca and reporting him. We dont talk - major Dv and he will love the fact he has infested my home.

Indorex or acclaim, one lasts longer than the other though so check.

Do the WHOLE house, under things, down the crevices and cracks, everywhere. Do not assume that because dog/people/whatever don't go there, fleas wont. They will.

Having hte house as your first line of defence if people are regularly visiting flea ridden places is vital.

See if the kids will wear bracelets/anklets/socks/shoes that have a drop of teatree/lavender etc type essential oil in them as these things are not only going to put fleas off but also kill them.

I would recommend getting a seresto collar. You can get them from the vet but they're way more expensive than in pets at home, they are kept locked up at pets at home and only specially trained staff can sell them. I have used them with my dogs for several years. After I adopted my latest dogs, I'd forgotten about fleas until the horror of seeing them crawling around and the constant scratching, I went to the vets who confirmed I was right about the collars. They've been life changing here, if a dog gets infected before you get one the fleas will be pretty much gone the next day and they stay gone for about 9 months until you need to buy a new one. As for your ex......

What is the flea treatment you use? Some aren’t effective any more.

Copperoliverbear · 11/11/2023 23:23

Tell him to flea treat the cat or the kids aren't coming and if he doesn't look after the cat report him.
Also join a pet plan at the vet and get your flea and worming treatment from them, it's better. X

You need prescription treatment from the vet as well as Indorex for the house.

Alloveragain3 · 11/11/2023 23:56

Use Advantage drops. They contain Imidacloprid which should be effective and you can get it over the counter.

Bravecto? From the vets and indorex spray from pets at home (it more expensive at the vets)

This is the only combination that worked for us a few weeks ago with our dog. Literally spent £100s trying to get rid of the flees on the dog and around the house. Off the shelf stuff doesn't work, and for our dog, neither does the stuff put on the skin behind the neck (administered by the vet). Bravecto and Indorex finally saved my sanity. It was me or the dog by this stage...

BackAgainstWall · 12/11/2023 00:40

Advantage flea treatment is excellent- you can see the fleas dropping off dying.

PetsAtHome do it and you don’t need a prescription.

Floralnomad · 12/11/2023 01:50

Indorex the house and get the dog to the vets and get it an effective treatment and then keep giving it as prescribed , you are wasting your money using non prescription treatments . Our dog has bravecto tablets and that seems to work .

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/11/2023 14:28

Get stuff from the vets, it might cost more but will actually work. Frontline is useless. I find that is all I need. Regular thorough vacuuming will help until you can get a proper flea treatment for them.

margotrose · 12/11/2023 14:30

Buying loads of random OTC treatments is probably more expensive in the long run than just going to the vet and paying for the prescription stuff.
