friend said I have no hobbies

Apparently she'd struggle to buy me a gift because she thought I didn't really have any hobbies or interests?
I like to go to concerts, I do sports like running, bike rides, walks, I like learning languages, I like art, travelling, creative writing etc.
Maybe I don't attend something very niche like a burlesque dancing class or pottery, but so what? What do people even class as hobbies and interests? I'm not sure if it was meant to be a dig?
When I told her I do art, she said 'Do you actually go to classes of anything?'

Also she knows I do the above because I've discussed them with her/posted things about them on social media.

She has a very narrow definition of hobbies clearly.

Also there are plenty of nice generic gifts such as a nice candle or fancy chocolates and coffee. She is just being a moaning Minnie.

Your friend is a dick. I don't need to know someone's hobbies to give them a gift.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 11/11/2023 21:06

But none of those are easy gift hobbies. Considering the first part of the conversation, that is what I assume she meant. She's not going to buy you a concert ticket or new pair of running trainers is she?

A strange comment to make. Since when has attending classes been a pre requisite for qualifying for having hobbies?

fantafruittwists · 11/11/2023 21:06

My friend is very into obscure bands, a very avid reader of literature and fascinated by history. I don't read as much, I am interested in learning and reading but I'm not really into the classics. I do wonder if sometimes she looks down on me.

She can’t be arsed to think of a present.

Whereas if you collected gnomes or something she wouldn’t have to put any thought into it.

She’s telling you you’re not worth her using her brain to think of a gift. Ditch her.

TowerRaven7 · 11/11/2023 21:11

I have a friend like you, she has interests but nothing someone could purchase something for and I agree it’s frustrating but I’d Never tell her this! Maybe it slipped out? She did mention an interest a few months ago and I am tailoring her Christmas gift towards it…then hopefully I can pick up leads this year about what to get her next year! Honestly, my friend is not self centered at all and maybe you are the same? Some people you know for sure their strong likes and dislikes because they talk about themselves all the time! Anyway I don’t think it’s anything to lose a friendship over but she really didn’t need to tell you that.

The Amazon wish list feature is your friend. Compile a list of things you fancy, send the link to anyone who claims you’re “hard to buy for”. Easy.

It sounds like you have lots of interests, but even so, it can be hard to know what products/equipment people like/use/need. I mean, I could buy you a set of oil paints for example, but they may be a brand you don’t like. So yeah, I recommend online wish lists, or asking for a gift card to a shop you like.

DinkyOne89 · 11/11/2023 21:15

But she also likes art and creative writing? Nice pens, paper, art supplies etc. Even for a runner, a headtorch, arm strap for your phone, a gadget of some sort?

You clearly do have hobbies OP and if she thought about it a little more then she could find a gift. She sounds disinterested x

My husband has a wide range of interests. It makes him interesting.

But I cannot buy a gift that suits his interests. Because he either has it already or it's too niche for someone who doesn't share the interest.

What's my point? People with hobbies/interests aren't easier to buy for unless you are a lazy arse that thinks anything within that category fits the bill.

(The exception is golf. Golfers seem to like any old golfy shit.)
