Itching all over my body

UndertheCedartree · 11/11/2023 08:50

This has been going on for a good year now. I'm so itchy all the time. My body is covered in unsightly scabs from me scratching.

Has anyone experienced this and know what the cause could be?
What helped with it? Thanks!

Have you seen the GP and had any blood tests to check for health issues?

The liver can sometimes be implicated in itching.

redfacebigdisgrace · 11/11/2023 08:52

Scabies? It’s rife!

Yes, I did think liver. I need to check actually whether they've looked at that recently because I've had a lot of blood tests over the last couple of years. Should have said this in OP but I have low iron (prescribed iron tablets), low B12 (having B12 injections) and an under-active thyroid (prescribed levothyroxine.)

I had scabies as a teen!! So know what that's like and luckily it's not that! The joys of me and my boyfriend sitting on our sofa on bin bags covered in pungent nit lotion!! 😮

Oh god it’s a total nightmare. We’ve had it in our house and it’s been hellish! Glad it’s not that.

tigger1001 · 11/11/2023 09:12

I had this. Doctors couldn't find a real cause for it other than potentially yet another symptom of peri menopause. They did though prescribe me strong anti histamines which did help.

Yoh have my sympathy- I remember only too well the scabs all over from scratching so much.

ThreeTescoBags · 11/11/2023 09:13

Gallbladder issues can cause itching. I scratched my legs raw before I finally had the bloody thing removed. Not sure how you'd identify it other than having a gallstone attack though.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Hope you managed to clear it.

Is there a test they can do for peri menopause? I'm 44 so could be that. I'm allergic to anti histamines, unfortunately. But I'm glad they helped you. I think I do need to go to the GP with this.

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry to hear that. I've never had gallstones, though.

Allergies to the medication?

If you're also allergic to antihistamines, it's possible that you could get some relief with steroids. I'd definitely request referral to an allergy clinic, though.

I'm in peri and the itching is horrific. How old are you OP?

jeaux90 · 11/11/2023 09:29

Check your washing liquid for MI (Methylisothiazolinone)

So many people are allergic to it and don't realise. It's also in a lot of shampoos and shower gels.

If it's in laundry then Faith in Nature is a good alternative liquid.

I've struggled with episodes of extreme itching a few times in my life. Lasted a few months each time and for me it was my bodies reaction to stress.

I also had other symptoms which made it tricky to pinpoint the cause but the itching was debilitating.

LadyEloise1 · 11/11/2023 10:06

In the past year has your GP investigated it @UndertheCedartree

It's awful isn't it? I find it hard when I'm in public and desperate to scratch but can't. Also so uncomfortable at night.

I think you need to go to your GP to get it checked. Soon.

Magnesium deficiency?

Goinggoinggone12345 · 11/11/2023 10:41

I had similar - turned out to be caused by gluten. Cleared up within 3-4 days of cutting it out.

UndertheCedartree · 11/11/2023 12:30

Thank you for all the ideas. I'm going to see my GP about it.

I had similar a few years ago. Was my washing powder

KimberleyClark · 11/11/2023 13:51

Are you old enough to be peri/menopausal? That can cause itchy skin.
