Someone just told me there’s conspiracy theories that the shops are lying to raise prices.
I’ve seen one theft this year (as a shopper).
Suppose the AIBU is “To believe that theft has indeed increased.”

None of you stuck up mumsnetters can ever make me feel guilty so you are wasting your time

As I said, there’s a cultural problem in some corners of society. An unrepentant one. That’s why the solutions to it do not lie in policing alone.

But, it must also be remembered, that it’s not everyone in an area/community/income bracket - there are many people in living in pretty desperate poverty who wouldn’t consider buying stolen coats for their kids or buying butter stolen from a food bank. There is nothing ‘stuck up’ about that.

Sadly the people who do buy these things don’t care.

@Ilovecakey yeah because people who don't steal are just so stuck up 🙄

MidnightMeltdown · 13/11/2023 11:37

I grew up in poverty and we somehow managed not to steal. Being poor isn't an excuse. People who do this sort of thing are just filth. They have no morals or dignity.

Let’s not pretend this isn’t happening at the top end too. I recently saw a well dressed guy walk into M&S put a large joint in his shopping bag and walk out. I suppose you never really know people’s circumstances but he certainly didn’t look like he was strapped for cash.

On another occasion as I was driving past a bus stop outside Aldi, i saw a group of women being accosted by Lidl security. The security was stacking all their meat onto the pavement. He told them they were banned from the store.

If I see someone stealing food I look the other way, it not my business. Ime you have to be in a pretty low place to steal in the first place. Also the amount of food waste supermarkets dispose is absolutely criminal, when it can be easily distributed to those who need it.
