Booster seats until they're 4'11"?

Isn't that a bit overkill? Surely some adults are that height and don't use boosters?

My DSis is that height.

J316 · 10/11/2023 13:33

I’m 4ft 8 🤣

McT123 · 10/11/2023 13:34

If you are the UK it is 135cm which is 4'5".

Hellocatshome · 10/11/2023 13:34

4 foot 11 or 12 year old. I think its to do with the strength of your bones/ligaments etc hence why short people over this age are ok.

WillowCraft · 10/11/2023 13:34

It's to do with skeletal maturity not just height. But seatbelts are designed for men and are not as safe for shorter women so you are right really. However that's not a reason to make a child less safe. Why would you put your child at any increased risk. Boosters are not expensive

SkyePye · 10/11/2023 13:35

Well if you'd rather they were injured because of incorrect belt positioning....

And I'm 5'4 and use a small booster fur belt position as my height is mainly in my legs

McT123 · 10/11/2023 13:35

...and under 12 so no adults need them legally.

Allmarbleslost · 10/11/2023 13:35

My dm is 4ft 11 and in her mid seventies. I don't think she'd go for it.

J316 · 10/11/2023 13:36

It’s 135cm so 4f 5

I wouldn't not put him in one! I was merely asking a question

Sadly many people ignore the guidance but generally the guidance in the U.K. is very lax compared to other countries.

Ds was about 5ft/12 years before he could comfortably sit in a safe position in the car without a booster.

This explains it thanks

My DS is 7 and 128cm. Very many of his friends are already not using car seats which I am surprised by. However if DS continues to grow at the same rate he’ll be 135cm in around a year so not particularly long to go.

Hence the only seats we've ever used are BeSafe.

Supposed to be until 12 though?

135cm or 12, whichever comes first

MrsJellybee · 10/11/2023 13:47

135cm in UK, 150cm in Europe. I think Europe are sensible.

MelRoc · 10/11/2023 13:49

My 9 year old is 150cm but he’s still on a booster as the seat belt positioning without one is awful!

Did he feel self conscious about this at secondary school?

BertieBotts · 10/11/2023 14:35

150cm is the end of the legal standard. Norway (where Besafe is from) has the 135cm upper legal minimum to use a seatbelt, like the UK. So 135-150cm is a grey area where you can use your own discretion.

It's like this because some DC in some cars will fit OK at 135cm without a booster seat but it's much closer to 100% at 150cm. You're likely OK doing an occasional journey without at 135cm+ but it's likely to be better to keep using the booster seat as long as they physically fit into it.

Ponderingwindow · 10/11/2023 14:37

short adults can be injured by seatbelts designed for the average adult male. Some adults use small boosters.

Daffodildilys · 10/11/2023 14:43

I’m 4ft10 and 62. Just off to buy my booster seat!!

No, he actually made the decision to stay on it a bit longer as he felt comfy.

but to be honest if he had felt self conscious then that wouldn’t have been an argument for him not to stay on it as his safety comes first. I never understand when parents let children complaining be an argument to get rid of the seats before they are safe to do so .

murasaki · 10/11/2023 15:01

We were fine in the 80s without them, but then we did have harness style seat belts until about 10.
