Does anyone think that eventually when driverless cars become more common place, you'll be able to sit behind the wheel if you haven't passed your test?

In other words will lessons and tests become a thing of the past?

Unlikely, as you may need to take control at anytime. You won't be allowed to have 5 alcoholic drinks and have a snooze in the back!

MidnightOnceMore · 09/11/2023 20:50

Depends on the extent to which it is autonomous.

I can't wait for fully autonomous vehicles, although the big worry I do have is whiplash because pedestrians will 100% try their luck knowing the reaction time is much better.

TheChristmasPig · 09/11/2023 20:53

In the end they will be completely autonomous. You will be no more likely to have to take over than if you were a passenger on the DLR

sipsqueak · 09/11/2023 20:57

I assume they'll be fully autonomous at some point soon. But where's my flying car dammit?!

Cheshiresun · 09/11/2023 21:16

I've thought that. Wish they'd hurry up, they've been going on about this for years....

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 09/11/2023 21:23

Yes I expect them to be fully automated so passengers won't need to learn to drive - eventually.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/11/2023 21:28

I would imagine that eventually, they won't have a steering wheel at all.

I don't think that'll be far off.
Amazon have successfully trialed delivery by drone and it's going to start happening here soon.
I think drones will be the 'flying cars' we've all been waiting for. I think they will be automated too. Just type in an area or post code then whoosh, off you go.

ChimChimeny · 09/11/2023 21:30

After watching Upload I’m not in a hurry for them to become the norm…

Sparehair · 09/11/2023 21:31

I imagine one day that people being allowed to drive themselves will be illegal. it will be 100% autonomous. I’d also imagine vehicle ownership will become less common- you’ll just summon one and it will turn up.

dottypotter · 09/11/2023 21:45

Don't know but they will know doubt be very expensive to start with.

Fionaville · 09/11/2023 21:47

Yes they will be completely automated. There are already questions about the driverless trucks that are already being produced. Because they will eliminate the jobs of 3 million truck drivers in America. So, they don't even need a human in them.

DixonD · 09/11/2023 21:48

I read that you do (at least as things are) you DO have to have a full driving licence, in case you need to take control.

AHelpfulHand · 09/11/2023 21:53

I dont like the idea of them.

what about parking with them outside an address, or reversing on the drive. How will it know what to do?

Sensors I guess

KnickerlessParsons · 09/11/2023 21:57

I don't think you need people to pilot aeroplanes either. The pilot is only there in case anything goes wrong.

Autonomous parking is already available in some cars. Actually, cars are already better than human drivers in this.

Different sensors can be used- mainly wide angle cameras and lidars, so the car measures the space, does the math, and counts the best approach strategy to smoothly park. And than eithe leads the driver to execute it (shows the right steering wheel position and how far to go), or does it itself.

AppleKatie · 09/11/2023 22:10

I can’t wait to summon one for the morning commute so I can snooze in the back. Unless it does that I’m not interested 🤣

In some cases the pilot actually makes things worse :)

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 09/11/2023 22:33

It would be great for long boring motorway drives

CanadianReader · 09/11/2023 22:39

There's an area in San Francisco that uses driverless cabs. You just get in the back and there isn't a driver. It'll be cheaper to hail one of these than to own a car.

Will robotaxis ever be commercially viable? | FT Tech

San Francisco has become ground zero for US testing of driverless taxis, but how close are we to truly embracing them? The FT’s Patrick McGee pays a visit to...

What will (likely) eventually happen is the concept of private car ownership will largely disappear altogether in favour of autonomous on-demand transportation.

Flying cars are complete fantasy, however, and always will be,
