to keep my family in the 2000s?

NOT A TROLL, LONG TIME LURKER BUT THS IS MY 3RD POST ONLY AFTER I GOT MYSELF AN EMAIL ACCOUNT!

Am I being unreasonable for staunchly holding onto our cherished Nokia 2660s, the nostalgic DSi, and a TV that, against all odds, still proudly boasts teletext after two glorious decades?

In an age where the tech landscape is dominated by sleek smartphones, cutting-edge gaming consoles, and ultra-modern TVs, our family has made a conscious decision to dance to the beat of a different, more retro drum.

Let's start with the phones—our Nokia 2660s. Yes, they are the newest 4G models, but their heart lies in the early 2000s, evoking the essence of a bygone era when T9 texting was an art form and the satisfying flip of a phone marked the end of a conversation.

Then there's the DSi, a handheld relic that still captivates our kids' attention in a world saturated with high-end gaming experiences. The pixelated joy of Mario Kart and the whimsical adventures of Pokemon are timeless, transcending the allure of the latest gaming gadgets.

Last but certainly not least, our TV—a stalwart companion for two decades, steadfastly resisting the allure of flashy, modern counterparts. It may lack the bells and whistles of its contemporary counterparts, but it still proudly displays teletext, a feature long forgotten in the age of smart TVs.

While our friends and family may marvel at the sleekness of their smartphones and the brilliance of their high-tech home theaters, we find solace in the simplicity of our tech time capsule. The kids are content, the Nokia 2660s chime harmoniously, and the TV's teletext serves as a delightful nod to the past.

So, am I being unreasonable to resist the ever-tempting allure of modern tech? Is there an inherent beauty in preserving the relics of the 2000s for our family's enjoyment? I'm eager to hear your thoughts on our journey through time and technology!

I agree with you on the phones.
Whenever I watched or read dystopian stuff, I can see how society is heading that way. I couldn't figure out the zombie apocalypse but noww was I'm convinced it's to do with phones. People are walking around like zombies with their brains melted by TikTok.

I love my smart tv though so would like to keep that.

You could even get this excellent Nokia flip phone from 1997

2G is getting killed of soon though, so I doubt it. BTW its motorola not nokia, this was my mums phone way back

I used a smart tv in a hotel a few years ago, and I liked it too. I wouldnt get rid of our old one though , at least not before it breaks.

You seem weirdly proud to be bringing your kids up with just slightly outdated tech – and they still seem to have a lot of screen time. I don't think this is quite the flex you think it is...

I understand the principle

but how do you manage banking etc

or work?

I agree children will learn but I wouldn’t want to put them in a position where they have to learn too much in a sudden whoosh.

Does your nokia have WhatsApp op? I moved to sim only a few years ago after a contract expired but still have a smart phone. I think the mental benefits of being a little less available would be great but id still like whatsapp if poss?

yellowgingham8 · 09/11/2023 19:38

I used to be like this. Then I married a Software Engineer and realised that being technically literate to a higher standard, and maybe even knowing a bit of coding, actually would have set me up for the workforce much better than my erudite ways. I naturally like old things, but I also see the value in children learning more advanced IT skills and I think programming is one of the most valuable things young people can learn nowadays, so I won't be actively trying to keep our household in the past.
Interestingly, I've noted that young people in poorer countries tend to study programming more, whereas in the UK arts degrees are much more popular, and this is because if you're in a poor country you study what you know will lead to a successful job and allow you to move abroad. Wish someone had told me this before I decided to do an arts degree and am now working for a pittance :(

Great for you and the partner but guess what the kids are going to work in a world without old phones

I find your OP weird. It's like those threads on here where people used to try to outdo each other over how little they spent on their weddings.

I have a 10 year old Honda CRV that I love but I don't feel the need to start a thread about it.

2g will never get killed off. 3G is going this next year or so

logintoshareyourviews · 09/11/2023 19:44

I don't know why anyone would doubt this. I couldn't be less interested in phones or TVs or watching films or whatever (I haven't got a TV). My phone is older than yours, OP!

Laughing at the idea of a phone like mine having whatsapp. @Suunnyd, these phones do nothing except ring and text. They don't go on the internet. If you're really fancy, they have "predictive texting". Mine plays Snake.

I do have a desktop computer, though.

As for banking etc: I manage that by going to the bank/whatever else people use their phones for.

My DC grew up without this stuff. However, they are now in their early 20s and at least one of them is addicted to their phones!

haha. Just my writing style I guess. Slightly out of date had me chuckling though Smile

Oh wow the usual brackets I use pulled up a smiley=]

How did you know it "pulled up an emoji" before you posted it? Confused

FWIW we don't have a smart TV either, and it has a PS2 plugged into it. DC occasionally play on their DSs.

(We do also have a PS3, PS4, smart phones and a switch though)

Well, op is rather magical. She receives a service that doesn’t broadcast anymore and her kids are majestic coders and users of AI via sometimes borrowing a Mac at the library.

NotInTheMoodForIt · 09/11/2023 21:07

So you start your OP saying this is your third post? But then later you seem unaware that you have posted a poem about your Nokia and say it must have been your daughter? Who is 8? And then later say it was the 14 year old son using chat gpt?

So a 14 year old boy who didn't know how to turn an iPhone on, made a poem on chatgpt and chose his mothers mumsnet account to post it on for giggles and it's just a coincidence he navigated to busiest of boards and the poem was about a phone you based your username on and were later making a thread about? How did he even know your password in the first place?

Alifestylechoice · 09/11/2023 21:32

@NotInTheMoodForIt told you, it’s a magical family!

Are you quite well? This is Mumsnet. MN and Mumsnet are the same entity.

Jesus, it's got me arguing with a bot now. It jumped the shark with the Steiner school bollocks.
