To want at least one woman

I need to go for an mri. It is being done under my private health insurance. Last mri I had with them was in a large lorry trailer in the car park of the hospital and it was 2 male radiographers. One of the men was very overweight and so when I was laying down, because of the lack of space, his body touched mine every time he tried to walk down the side of the scanner (before they moved me inside to be scanned) . I felt very uncomfortable and a bit vulnerable laying down in there with just the 3 of us.

I booked the follow up mri a and I asked the booking nurse if I could have at least 1 woman in the room. She said they couldn't accommodate that as all the radiographers they have been sent are men at the moment but she would mark it on the file that I don't like being touched. I really need this mri. I don't have anyone who can come with me.

I might not get the same 2 men so they may find it easier to walk beside the scanner but it's not the point is it, it will still be 2 men ? I need to check AIBU. I know logically I will be okay but I have ptsd and struggle to be alone with stramge men sometimes

You're not being unreasonable at all and should be able to ask for a chaperone as standard. In the nhs you always can. You're basically a paying customer so keep pushing back/escalating this request to higher managers.

You need to ask HQ to alter your thread title as it sounds rather dodgy

Doggymummar · 09/11/2023 18:05

You are fine to request or bring a chaperone, probably not in the room with the scanner tho due to radiation

Mummymummy89 · 09/11/2023 18:06

An MRI doesn't produce ionising radiation... I think you're mixing up with x-rays

MrsFawkes · 09/11/2023 18:12

I know exactly how you feel OP.

Years ago I had a similar very intimidating experience in a medical setting.

I will never let that happen again. I’d rather drag a woman off the street than go through what I felt during the intimate examination I needed.

Stand your ground.

Thank you all. When I turned up they had arranged a nurse to chaperone. The lead man asked me why I needed a chaperone.i mumbled a response but the nurse was lovely. She made sure they left the room when I had to remove my trousers and walked me back to the main building afterwards. I am glad I didn't have to make a fuss

@Coffeesnob11 that's great that someone paid attention and put that in place. Less great that you were asked why...🤦🏼‍♀️

Omg you can't make it up. I'm so sorry op I'm enraged on your behalf. Hope the rest of your treatment goes well.
