Secret Santa based on initial

Hi all

I just went back to work today after having 2 weeks off and they did secret Santa hat .. as i was off my work friend chose one for me and handled a piece of paper with the persons name.

Now ... apparently this year it's a little different you have to buy a gift that starts with either of the persons initials..

For example if their initials are C M you could maybe buy a Candle or Mug .... hope that makes sense.

I think it's extremely silly!!! but I don't want to be the one to go against the flow

Can someone please help me with any ideas?
The persons initials are A G - any secret Santa gifts that you can think of that start with either .. A or G 🙈 I'm finding this really stressful and unnecessary on top of my workload and stress
Please help

TIA xx

Can it be more than one item to that value? If so, some suggestions...

Alpaca wool socks

BatteredScallops · 08/11/2023 18:11

£50. Lord- that is my total budget for my two godchildren!

Beautiful3 · 08/11/2023 18:28

£50?!

Katherineryan1986 · 08/11/2023 18:34

£50! - I barely spend that on family members!
Pretty sure not everyone in your workplace is going to be in a position to spend that much, very unfair in my opinion.
£5 is difficult, but £10 is doable easily (to find an item I mean) although for some people £10 will be a lot to have to spend on someone you don’t know.

BatteredScallops · 08/11/2023 18:38

Yep agree that it is an outrageous price. Maybe the workplace pays well but there is still going to be someone who is doing it tough. My old workplace had some on wages that needed tax credit top-ups to make liveable and the CEO drove a Maserati and had a holiday home in Portugal. Slight difference in what they would consider a minor expense.

Twazique · 08/11/2023 18:45

I am the same age and would be very happy with some lovely green gloves (and scarf).

Leeds2 · 08/11/2023 18:49

£50 is outrageous, and I really can't believe everyone taking part is happy with that.
But, I would go for a gift card, Amazon would be my choice to go with the A but anyone would do.
Or tickets for an Alpaca walk if they do them near you. I have done a Llama walk and it was great fun, maybe a bit different from the usual.
Angora scarf.
Selection of shower Gels from somewhere posh.
Gym top, or leggings, if she is a gym goer.
Groupon voucher.
I actually think basing it on initials is a good idea, but £50 is just too much.

bringthecactusin · 08/11/2023 18:49

Same initial is a doddle.

Stressful secret santa is when you have to also pick out a clause too such as (genuine ones from previous years) "It has to rhyme with the person's name" or "So big it needs 2 people to carry it"

Answer: My friends brother, Samuel Dickson, got some bacon flavour lollipops I found on Amazon...."Ham you licks on".
And a work colleague got a massive full height standing cheval mirror with a drawer base I picked up cheap on eBay when she'd joked that's what she'd wish for.

So yeah, same letter is easy!!

BatteredScallops · 08/11/2023 19:05

Bleeding heck.

Christmas is the most expensive time of year for most of us. Who comes up with this shit?

CrushingOnRubies · 08/11/2023 19:30

So Ag is the chemical symbol for silver so I'd get her silver jewellery with apples, goats, etc in the motif

purser25 · 08/11/2023 19:43

£50 Ridiculous shame you can't opt out

BeaLola · 08/11/2023 19:54

If they are a gardener perhaps an Apple Tree, Agapanthus bulbs, Anemones corms, different bulbs for different flirting periods Gladioli fir summer + gift card for balance

Absolut Vodka

Gin - the subscription box thing you can cancel - see Christmas referral boards

Angel decoration for tree - organs a pewter one or similar - Dower & Hall

Diverging from Georg Jensen - they do Christmas decs or keyring within budget

Aesop resurrection handwash - smell is divine

Aromatherapy Associates - wait til they have one of many discount weekends and buy the chest of bath /shower oils

A for Anything. Buy whatever you want.

Genuis.

Bailey32 · 08/11/2023 20:52

Can you not tell your friend that you are having difficulty with choosing this other lady a present as you don't know her? Maybe request swapping people. It's a valid request as she picked them. She took the names and you don't know the other coworker. I'm sure she can help you choose a present too as you are undecided. There are good suggestions here and she can look at the list with you to give her opinion? I think £50 is too much for a secret Santa. Is that minimum or maximum? Good Luck! xx

Lavendersquare · 09/11/2023 10:24

I'm reeling from the £50 budget, our office secret Santa has only recently been increased to £10 maximum.

Personally I'd be scouring Vinted for something new with tags beginning with A or G worth £50 but being sold for £10 😄

ManateeFair · 09/11/2023 10:38

lamad · 08/11/2023 17:06

Oh wow lots of ideas already!!!
Thank you all! I really appreciate your help

It's for a lady, she's in her 50s if that helps.

I'll write down all of your suggestions

The budget is £50

FIFTY QUID???? For an office Secret Santa?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/11/2023 10:42

Xanthe, Xander and Xavier are going to be really pissed off with their presents, aren't they?

I'd just end up with polyester jumpers or whisky. Neither of which I'd want.

ThinWomansBrain · 06/12/2023 18:15

Gift voucher by PP is a good call

cheat-ish - calendar or mug with pics of goats/gorillas/giraffes/antelopes/alpacas
(I like animals - you could vary the theme!)

less cheatish, depending on budget - alpaca wool socks - very warm!

OR - ta-daaa💃
Alpaca Wool Gloves, nailing the A and the G

well at least they don't know your MN name, how many mooncups would you want

NeedToChangeName · 06/12/2023 18:31

Secret Santa is supposed to be a bit of fun. Seems a pity to pay £50, when you don't know the person well enough to know what she'd like

lanthanum · 06/12/2023 22:50

lamad · 08/11/2023 17:15

I know! I was shocked too! But apparently they came to the conclusion that with the inflation you can't buy anything for £20-£30 😵‍💫 I can easily think of gifts that would make me happy for under £20 but clearly they couldn't

I made a list of things I might like for Christmas. I think only one of them might cost (a little) more than £30.
