To be put off personal training by this pain?

Doing personal training a few months now. Severe pain today after yesterday’s workout. Did some push up’s and shoulder press so some new bits. My arms are in worst muscle pain I’ve ever felt today. Can’t raise above my head or reach for anything without pain. It’s stopping me doing normal tasks like brushing my hair. I will need to carry stuff in work tomorrow and need this pain gone. Tried gel didn’t help. AIBU to be put off personal training because of this? I can’t be in bits for work after a session. Also tips please!!

Paracetamol, it's just DOMS it's not that bad! 😂

Hot bath.

Wheat packs on the muscles.

Alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Tell your PT so you both know not to go in so hard and fast next time.

You've been doing PT for months and this is the first time you're experiencing DOMS?

FrangipaniBlue · 05/11/2023 14:39

I'd say that's normal for if it's the first time you've done shoulder press/press up type movements.

Also surprised it's the first time you've had DOMs?

Echo telling your PT though, might bed to lighten the weights a little.

Lis1992 · 05/11/2023 14:42

No it’s not the first time I’ve had DOMS. I’m saying this is worse I literally can’t use my arms.
of course I’ve had muscle pain after exercise before 😂

Over summer I reduce my gym work, when I start back up again in autumn the DOMs always seem worse in my arms than legs.

I'm convinced it's because we use these muscles less in everyday life than we do our leg muscles.

What's DOMS?

Ha ha ha ha! It’s just DOMS. It’s not pain, it’s just discomfort and it’s important to learn the difference between the two.

The best antidote is more exercise - get some mobility into the sore bits by a warm up to get the blood flowing and then mobilise. A good walk, or for arms, arm swings are good - anything to loosen up the muscles affected.

I love DOMS - it shows I’ve really worked hard.

I get it bad two days after. Hot bath and/or Pilates style movements to reduce the stiffness.

If this time it's too much just feed back to your PT and ask them to scale down a bit.
