Aibu to ask what it was and how you coped

Am very lucky I have. Been able to build a new house

Saved for a long time
Lived on floor at friends for years
You name it

Managed to get it all going two years ago

Now builder warned me prices went up for many things so I saved extra and today he came with the final bill

It's 35k more than expected and due now

Going to take on another job and ask if I can pay it over tue next year with 10 per cent added for the late payment

I know the builder well and have dealt with him for 15 years now

But my god !!!

No one come at me please
I did try my best to save extra when he told me the costs had changed
Just wish this was easier

We've just got a mortgage on a tracker rate 5.4% for that small mortgage amount, you may as well also pay off all your credit cards from your borrowing and pay it back over 5 years, the mortgage we have has no maximum over payment and no early exit fees so if you can pay it off sooner you do.
All debts consolidated and secured against your main asset, with affordable monthly payments seems very sensible.

Paying for the funerals of my expartner who still lived with me and also his father who died a week later.
Final bills are arriving with me in the next few weeks and I anticipate around 10k which I'll have to borrow to pay. All grants/ funeral payments are based around the income status of the remaining relatives and none of us receive the necessary benefits.
While I had removed my ex's name from all household bills, mortgage etc I'd not really planned for this double whammy of bills and his death was unexpected.
Next of kin to my ex's father are my young adult children and I just can't burden them with these bills.
The constant message on mumsnet is for women to leave their husband/partner and I often totally agree.Extricate your finances is also so important and don't continue living with someone when the entire relationship has gone.

@thisisasurvivor I appreciate this will be a shock and I suspect you don’t like not being able to pay this immediately.

Take a breath and think about this logically. If you believe you could pay off £35k in one year by doing 60 hour weeks then you are in a relatively fortunate position.

A small mortgage for £35k at this stage may make sense. You can get 5 year mortgages and possibly 2 year ones.

A 5 year £35 k fixed rate mortgage at 5% would have monthly repayments of £661. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mortgages/mortgage-rate-calculator/

Given that you have maxed out credit cards you also need to factor in monthly repayments to pay before 0% period ends and you end up on high interest rates.

Work out your total monthly debt repayments, including a 5 year mortgage at £700 a month. Add on your other monthly/annual out goings and this will give you the net pay you need each month. Hopefully this won’t need 60 hour weeks.

Use a broker to find the best 5 year fixed rate mortgage.

This is so so helpful and makes so much sense

Will look into this on Monday

I got sent a bill for £200 odd by the security company the police called out to break into my mum’s flat when she suddenly died last year. That was unexpected. Then the funeral costs etc. A few grand altogether that I hadn’t expected to have to part with that I couldn’t really afford, especially when DS2 was only 8 weeks old.

That's so hard

I have had to pay for two funerals too

Around 6 k over ten years

Plus 1k next month for the gravestone to be updated and cleaned

Whataretheodds · 05/11/2023 08:49

If he didn't give you the updated costing months ago when you asked for it he can't expect you to magic up £35k now.

Suggest you negotiate a payment timeline with him for the extra while in parallel looking into a mortgage or unsecured loan to cover it.

SmokeyToo · 05/11/2023 08:55

Worst unexpected bill I had was a $14k vet bill for one of my cats. I had a few thousand in savings, but nowhere near enough. I ended up getting a loan for the rest. It certainly set me back a lot financially.

I had a bill for over £1k for electricity. What was most surprising was that I wasn’t even a customer of British Gas. Yet they chased and bullied me for two years for that money. I’d literally never been a customer of theirs 🙄

Me too! We did a renovation and I got N Power to fit an electricity meter, I paid them, all good.
About 6 months later I got a bill from British Gas, who I'd never had dealings with, it got to the point of them threatening bailiffs. It was hugely stressful following a stressful build.

Yes that is the exact plan

60 k over 6 months with 5k extra next summer

He may decline the extra payment but who knows

thisisasurvivor · 05/11/2023 09:17

I looked at a loan for 20k for someone with bad credit

This will cost me 42k apparently 😳😳

Mortgage probably cheaper than loan

Butchyrestingface · 05/11/2023 09:27

£35k over and you weren't adequately warned. Fucking hell. Your friendly neighbour must think you burn £50 notes as firewood, @thisisasurvivor!

Can you not take out a mortgage post-build? It would surely be cheaper.

We have not gone through building control yet so not sure how long the mortgage would take

But that def seems like a better 10 year option

Gosh he should have been more organised and I should have been more persistent 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

How did your lovely cat do?

I would do the same also xxxx

My house extension was nearly £10k over despite cut backs due to unforeseen complications. Houses are like that! Thankfully we had savings to call upon and no holiday that year.

He came through well, thank you - I'm glad you understand 'paying that much for a cat', some people don't. I don't have kids, so my pets are my little family. I do have human family that I'm very close to, but my pets mean an awful lot to me! Bruce (the cat) was extremely lucky to survive - he had a cardiac arrest while undergoing emergency surgery and there stats say under 10% of animals that undergo full CPR survive. It took a while, but he's back to his normal, fat, mean self! Lol!

Currently trying to raise £4000 for a vet bill for a friend's uninsured dog who got run over while we were looking after him. I'm so relieved he's on the mend, but we just don't have the money, and neither does my friend. But the alternative to his surgery was just not bearable

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 06/11/2023 00:47

Nowhere in the league of PP replies, but this was years ago when we were on the bones of our arses.
We had an uninsured cat (Never made that mistake again!) who seemingly couldn't walk on her back legs suddenly.
The vet suspected a broken pelvis. Several expensive procedures and an x ray later, it turned out she had caught her back leg awkwardly, and the skin had come away from the muscle, causing a pocket of air.
The final treatment was forever referred to as 'The £600 single stitch' for the rest of her life. Took us forever and selling a lot of possessions to finally get square with the debt.

Lesson for me to look into pet insurance

Eeekk!!

Good news is I think I may qualify for a small business Loan
Instead of taking mortgage out on house as it would take a long time to get the cash

@UndercoverCop who did you get your mortgage with?

UndercoverCop · 07/11/2023 10:07

@SuperGreens west Bromwich building society through London and country brokers

thisisasurvivor · 07/11/2023 13:25

I found London and country really good when I enquired with them previously
