Not the most thrilling post you’ll read today, but I’m in a fog of depression anyway and any little win where I can turn something crap into a happy event is just a bonus atm…
the back story is that I had 6 of those part baked baguettes that you shove in the oven and are really lovely for bacon or soup on a cold wet Sunday…
I was working earlier in my study and thought DH was supervising DS. DH was fast asleep. DS ( who inherits his brains from his father) took it upon himself to open all the part baked baguettes and snap them in half a spread a bit of butter in some of the chunks. It was a right bloody mess!
I hate food waste and my kitchen is very clean, so for now, I’ve bagged up this part baked bread chunks with smears of butter and popped in the fridge. I’m thinking if I slice these up and then follow the recipe for a simple bread and butter pudding the bread won’t be wasted? Does anyone know if this will work okay if the bread is still not quite baked? Will it be too gloopy or perhaps I could make the pudding in a shallower dish than normal? I’ve got all the ingredients but if anyone wants to suggest an even better recipe than do share!
Thanks.

I would bake them to finish them off, then cut them into cubes and fry (air fry if you have one) with salt, pepper and herbs. Croutons. Keep in a bag in the freezer or in Tupperware to use in the next few days. Top on soup or salads.

I know the rolls you are talking about- imo, won’t make a nice bread and butter pudding.

No, that sounds nasty!

Haruka · 04/11/2023 21:28

Can you turn them into garlic bread, since it sounds like your DH was trying to make that?

More butter in between the pre-cut chunks (or cut some more), mixed with some mixed herbs and lots of minced garlic.

@Razorcroft croutons would work! My half hearted attempt at slimming atm often leads me to making soups ! I’m getting rather good :) the last couple were very tasty. I’ll crouton them up then. Didnt know you could freeze them! There will be a lot of croutons so I shall make and freeze. Genius! Thanks 🙏

@Haruka they’re a bit malled for garlic bread I think , DS had torn them like a drunken raccoon. DH was snoring away while this was happening and DS has SEN so I’m lucky he didn’t try and microwave anything tbh. I’m gonna move my work computer downstairs because I’m fighting for my life to meet a work deadline atm and DH seems unable to remain awake .

I'd call it a day and just bin

Chromium24 · 04/11/2023 21:44

It's a creative idea to salvage the part-baked baguettes and turn them into a bread and butter pudding and yes it would work,

Haruka · 04/11/2023 21:44

Ah, I misread. Looks don't matter on that, though.

Alternatives are croutons, breadcrumbs or bread sauce. I wouldn't attempt B&B pudding with them tbh.
