This is really dumb - how do you work out medicine in 24 hours

I can work it out when it's been just a couple of days of medicine, but when it's gone on a few days I start getting a bit confused.

There has to be an easier way to work out when they can have the next dose and of what :

2nd of November

2:30 am ibubrofen

7:38 paracetamol

12:00 ibuprofen

14:20 paracetamol

16:40 ibuprofen

20:30 paracetamol

3rd November

00:20 ibubrofen

08:30 paracetamol

13:10 ibuprofen

16:25 paracetamol

21:20 ibuprofen

4th of November

02:50 paracetamol

10 am ibuprofen

I'm trying to work out when I can give the next dose of paracetamol. So essentially I go back to my chart and try to see how many doses I've given in the last 24 hours. Am I correct in saying that in the last 24 hours I have given two doses of paracetamol ? I'm really tired, I just can't work it out. Is there an easier way to work this out when you've been on this regime for a few days ? My DC has been on this regime for 4 days now ( today is the 4th day ). Doctors have said we need to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen to keep the temperature down, so we've been advised to use both like this.

Paracetamol can be given 4 times in 24 hours ( with at least 4 hour break in between doses ). Ibuprofen can be given 3-4 times in 24 hours with a minimum 6 hour break.

Thanks for your help. Any hacks to make this easier ?

Paracetamol
7am
11am
3pm
7pm
Ibuprofen
8am
2pm
8pm

I assume you're dosing a child? Why are they needing so many painkillers op?

I'd be seeing a gp (at the very least) if I was dosing a kid up for more than 48 hours on either unless under medical advice. I wouldn't be waking them in the night.

Thanks I'll try it that way. Makes more sense.

We've been to hospital twice already and seen a GP.

They say it's tonsillitis and we need to keep up with painkillers, as high temperatures and unsettled.

I've nearly always counted it one day at a time for the medicine as the 24hours as the overnight sleeping usually gives you enough of a break.

Where you're giving some in the night it complicates it slightly.

However, we've done:

7am - para

9am - ibu

11am - para

1pm - ibu

3pm - para

5pm - ibu

7pm - para

Means you can give an ibu in the night if needed. Para then has a 12 hour gap. If no ibu in the night then there's a 16 hour gap.

I haven't been waking them in the night. They've been waking up and crying in pain with very high temperature, so needed to give medication to help.

I'd be going back for antibiotics if the temperature was going on for more than a day or so!

Topjoe19 · 04/11/2023 10:57

You gave 2 doses of para yesterday? So one at say 3am today so you can give another now. I know its hard to work out when you're so tired.

He's on antibiotics already. Has been since day 2 of the illness. So has had 2 days on it already. Not sure what to do !

Hope he's better soon. That sounds very rough, he should pick up by now I'd have thought if he's already on ab's.

You shouldn't give anymore ibuprofen than what you've listed, it's 3 doses in 24 hours so that leaves nothing to be given overnight. Fine if they don't wake up but if they're waking unsettled then often you need to.

Yes OP you've given 2 doses in the last 24 hours.
