Had a rubbish month, looking like this one could be quite traumatic too. I'm looking for something to cheer us up....so when is too early for Christmas decorations?

I know it's my house I can do what I like etc etc, but realistically when would it be deemed socially appropriate to get the dec's up?

I am a little concerned too early and I'll get fed up with the clutter by mid December!

When is everyone planning to start theirs?

For voting purposes:

AIBU - you can't have them up before 1st Dec or you'll be shunned by society at large

YANBU - crack on anytime, you're a trend setter, everyone is just waiting for the first one.

Crack on! It's your house and doesn't affect anyone.

On one hand it's your home, do what you want. It doesn't really affect anyone else.

At the same time I think if I put decorations up this early, they wouldn't feel so special by the time Christmas rolls around. After two months they've basically just become part of the everyday décor.

If you want to start feeling festive, maybe you could do something else like get some mince pies, make some hot chocolates, and watch a Christmassy film?

You could start to put up fairy lights around the house, inside and out. They take ages to do so by the time you’ve finished it will be December anyway.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/11/2023 11:06

Why not put up some twinkly lights to switch on in the evening for now, then go full on grotto mode in December?

If you put all the decorations up now they will get dusty & dull by Christmas & need way too much cleaning before packing up.

I love Christmas and would have them up in November if it was just my choice!

Two houses in our village are already fully decorated with trees up and lights on.

If it makes you happy go for it.

This! Start Christmas baking with a glass of mulled wine and get everything in the freezer so that come December all you have to do is shove it in the oven thereby freeing up your time to drink more mulled wine.

SleepingisanArt · 04/11/2023 11:15

Do what you want! In this house decorations do not go up before 18th December - I like decorations but not for months!

HelpingJands · 04/11/2023 11:18

I haven't put my tree up yet but already have a lot of decorations out.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/11/2023 11:34

If you’re looking for something to cheer you up I would look for something that isn’t specifically a Christmassy decoration and certainly wouldn’t put up all your decorations now. You could decorate your home a bit without going the whole hog now, you could put up some nice twinkly fairy lights around a couple of the windows or a wintery wreath or foliage decoration or get a new bright throw or some cushions or some nice ornaments or something for the living room to brighten it up and add a bit of cheer without needing to do all the decorations now and be bored of them before Christmas is even here.

FelicityFlops · 04/11/2023 11:38

When I lived at home with my parents, the Christmas decorations and tree went up the week before Christmas Eve and were taken down on 6th January (latest).

CaroleSinger · 04/11/2023 11:39

I've had fairy lights on since Halloween. I hate the darker nights. Cheers the place up.

Purrpurrpurr · 04/11/2023 12:10

Something Christmassy you can do now is bake a traditional fruit cake, then you have plenty of time to 'feed' it with rum/brandy before decorating and eating it in the official festive period.
