Is it normal to write lists every day?

On my notes on my phone, I have daily things needed to be done, generally a week or two in advance. Things are written for each day, food shopping, call insurance, ballet with Dd etc. I then have a list for the food shop and meals made that week. Is this normal, do you do this or is it over the top? I would like to just be list free I think, but I just can’t.
I’m a teacher (not full time or a class teacher anymore) but spent so many years of my life with daily/monthly/termly plans, that I think it just became part of me.
It just feels quite boring to be so structured, is it uptight? Sometimes I even find myself putting ‘Wash hair’ on the list, that’s weird right? 😬

I use the calendar on my phone to plan things throughout the week and do more at the weekends. If I don't do this, things will build up and then I get stressed so no, you're not being unreasonable. It's an organised way to manage your daily life. I love a list ♥

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister · 03/11/2023 19:56

I write lists to REMIND me to look at other lists ! Somewhat smug as 88% of people also write lists according to your poll 🤣

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/11/2023 19:59

I'm a teacher too. For years when I was doing part time, supply etc I used a bullet journal and kept daily and monthly detailed lists, which helped me keep track of home stuff, plus work hours etc. Now I'm back to ft teaching and am a head of subject, I just use Microsoft To Do for job tasks, but I don't have time to make whole-life lists. Household stuff just gets done eventually, hopefully.

AuntieObnoxious · 03/11/2023 19:59

Perfectly normal, I love a daily list

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/11/2023 20:01

I write lists but then don't look at them for weeks on end. I know I have adhd because my life is barely managed chaos and if I start any chore I am bored within 30 seconds. But it is what it is.

catwithflowers · 03/11/2023 20:03

I make one for my day and it's just me and my husband, kids have left home. I love ticking things off; it gives me a bizarre sense of achievement 😂

AdaColeman · 03/11/2023 20:05

It's perfectly normal to make lists.
It helps you to get organised, and when you can cross an item off as completed, you can feel you've achieved something.

On bad days, I might add something to my list that I know I've already done, just so I can cross it off! not really
Occasionally I worry that I've got list of lists!

bakewellbride · 03/11/2023 20:06

I have a daily to do list on the notes on my phone, I need it to function! Every night I sit there with my diary and write tomorrows list

Mumaway · 03/11/2023 20:06

It's totally normal and acceptable. Google Keep was invented just for me, and also functions as a very effective torture device for DH when I share my lists! I also put lots of stuff as reminders in my calendar.

Royalbloo · 03/11/2023 20:09

Yep, 100%

Royalbloo · 03/11/2023 20:09

I adore a list. And adore more checking things off it x

Clarinet1 · 03/11/2023 20:09

I make lists of all sorts - my daily plans are usually noted down towards the end of the previous day. Some end up getting transferred if I haven’t actually achieved them but at least that helps me keep track of what I should be doing and avoid missing deadlines and major commitments. However I do put down things I know I will actually do like “dinner” “weight” (mine, first thing every Sunday!)
I am quite pleased with myself for recently writing a list of all my direct debits and standing orders in date order which I then photographed on my phone so I can easily check that things have gone through without having to look for paperwork!

girlfriend44 · 03/11/2023 20:18

I wouldn't put washing hair on my list as I just know when my hair needs doing.

saturnspinkhoop · 03/11/2023 20:22

I love a list too. I have an on-going to do list, lists for individual projects, lists for each day and sometimes a list of tasks for a single evening. I definitely feel more in control and on top of things with my lists. Once I’ve written it down, I don’t need to worry that I’ll forget it.

WhatHaveIFound · 03/11/2023 20:22

Completely normal for me. I have an A4 book on my desk for my daily work lists plus reminders on my phone for things I think of in the middle of the night. Also a shared shopping list on the phone which family can add to/go shopping for.

I need to start a separate list for all the things I have to sort out for my parents next!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 03/11/2023 20:26

I love lists. I have loads on the go all the time both on my phone and written, at home, at work. I even look forward to relaxing and writing a few lists! 😂

Doggymummar · 03/11/2023 20:32

No I don't but I put tasks in the Google calendar so today was optitian 9.00 volunteering 1045 to 4.30 dog sitting 2.30 4.30 but I wouldn't put clean teeth brush hair get dressed etc on a list. That's every day stuff.

Vettrianofan · 03/11/2023 20:33

I write it down too. Otherwise I forget.

Collagenmeeverywhere · 03/11/2023 20:34

@MafsisNafsbutcompelling No, I don’t think so, I think I’m far too organised to have adhd, if you see what I mean? I’m just wondering if I should be less rigid and abandon the list from time to time.
I’m actually happy as I looked at next weeks list and from Tuesday to Sat morning…there’s nothing on it (as of yet anyway) 😅this is after what feels like weeks of 5/6 things on the list every day.

Phew ok 😅

I sometimes want to have no lists though..just a spontaneous life of what will happen next? But I think I’d have to plan that too…somehow 😂

I use google calendar, adding tasks to the day. Things that come up weekly, 4 weekly, monthly, yearly or whatever regular occurence will automatically fill in forever. Also it's very easy to reschedule if something changes

Papyrophile · 03/11/2023 20:41

I have three calenders, one for the here and now. another for 2024 planning and one to coordinate them.

Papyrophile · 03/11/2023 20:42

It does work, most of the time, honestly.

CherrySocks · 03/11/2023 20:44

Lists are brilliant but you could also free up your calendar for a Day of Spontaneity every so often if you want to try it out !

Papyrophile · 03/11/2023 20:50

I do spontaniety in the afternoon, after I have discharged the chores that have to be done, and i try to do those in the morning, to keep my afternoon clear,

stormyslippers · 03/11/2023 20:51

Normal in life and encouraged in my industry! We even have software that works out your daily lists based on your inbox and project tasks. it includes things like "Take lunch" and "rest your eyes!"

My Gran was famous for her continuous list making!
