Would this worry you? (Nursery related)

DD recently started nursery. She’s my first and I don’t know if I’m being over the top. The nursery is classed as outstanding and it has many good reviews online and I also heard from word of mouth that it was good. The reception staff are very good, I don’t know the nursery staff too well.

I collected dd yesterday and when I got home I changed her nappy and the one they had put on was… badly put on. The back was folded down a bit so not fully over the back, the tabs weren’t straight and the flaps on the inside by the thighs weren’t pulled down. She tends to have soft poos and I think if she had pooed in this it would have ruined her clothes. I’m also worrying that they aren’t doing the job properly generally based only on this… am I being over the top? I was so worried about sending her and his has made my mind race.

Gently, I do think you’re being a bit over the top. This isn’t something to get worked up over x

KateyCuckoo · 03/11/2023 13:29

Blimey, save the worry for when something is actually wrong.

Plumful · 03/11/2023 13:31

Have you seriously never put a nappy on a bit awkwardly? This isn’t a cause for concern

junipw · 03/11/2023 13:31

@KateyCuckoo @Moon5 thanks… I’m on my own most of the time as dh currently working abroad so I have nobody to talk to about it really!! I know it sounds stupid I was just thinking that’s not going to work properly 🤦‍♀️

They have lots of children to look after. It could have been put on quickly because there was an incident they needed to help with or perhaps your child was wriggling around too much or something. Poonamis are common with single-use nappies so even done up properly they're not infallible.

I think you need to cut the nursery some slack.

junipw · 03/11/2023 13:32

@Plumful quite literally no I haven’t. But I am v perfectionist about nappies!! And life in general…!

Don’t worry, it’s hard with your first. Especially being on your own a lot. I used to worry about all sorts x

junipw · 03/11/2023 13:34

@Moon5 thanks. Do you know what they would do if she soils her clothes? I take in spares but will they put them in a bag for me?

This is honestly one of the silliest parental complaints I've ever heard Grin

junipw · 03/11/2023 13:35

@jesshomeEd im laughing now too but I was really worried about it earlier!!!

Yes they bag them up at our nursery

SummerInSun · 03/11/2023 13:40

Agree with all PP. One slightly poorly applied nappy is not telling you more about the nursery than the personal recommendations, Ofsted, etc, etc research you did.

You don't know what was happening - maybe another child started crying or there was an emergency during nappy change and the staff member had to rush it. Maybe your DC was very wriggly and that made it harder to put on than usual. Maybe now your DC is getting older and more active she got into it herself and loosened it.

FWIW as someone who had two DC at several nurseries, you judge it by how happy your DC is to be dropped off every morning, and how you feel about the staff when you chat to them at the end of each day and whether they seem to have a genuine interest in and affection for your child.

Moon5 · 03/11/2023 13:41

Whenever my son has soiled his clothes they’ve been put in his bag in a nappy bag

Plumful · 03/11/2023 13:41

@junipw not everyone is as perfect as you 🙄

Shipsafeinharbour · 03/11/2023 13:46

Even if she had done a poo, and it got onto her clothes, just wash her clothes, it wouldn't have ruined them?

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 03/11/2023 13:59

If it's a constant thing I'd say it in case its new untrained staff but I'd say like others suggest it was a rushed job. Another child could haven started vomiting or something. You should know the people who are with your child, im surprised you don't, could you have a chat with the room leader just for reassurance about what they do? They should be communicating with you and forming a good relationship, thats part of the job. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, they know a lot more about babies than you do so it can be really helpful for general tips. Try not to send her in her good clothes, they sometimes get awfully messy if doing sensory play.

Dogdaywoes · 03/11/2023 15:03

I'm glad you can laugh about it now.

If the nappy had leaked they'd have cleaned her up, changed her clothes and put the soiled ones in a nappy sac in her bag.

Word of advice - do not dress her nicely for nursery. By that, I mean clothes you would be sad to have stained or damaged. I used to buy second hand bundles for nursery. Even though they put aprons on kids, they allow them (quite rightly) to explore a lot with their hands so you often get lots and of food, paint, food colouring, chalk etc all over their clothes.

CyberCritical · 03/11/2023 15:18

Yes they'll bag her clothes in a nappy bag and put her in spares.

More likely to have soiled clothes at nursery because they cant be as responsive to dirtied nappies as you can be at home. Also they get clothes covered in food, paint, sand, water, we had one great day when they did messy play with cold baked beans......

Make sure you have a couple of sets of spares in the bag and use cheap/stained clothes for nursery so it isn't a big deal if they get ruined.

I totally agree with @Dogdaywoes.

I would suggest sending pretty hard-wearing, easily washed clothes to nursery. Even if they don’t have a nappy accident they are likely to get covered in paint/food/mud/whatever else they play with during the day. We learned very quickly that dark coloured leggings and 3/4 sleeved t-shirts work best as our nursery ‘uniform’.
We also have a ‘stain bucket’ at home filled with water and stain remover so I can rinse and then soak anything that comes home in the ‘bag of doom’ until laundry day (it seems to get most stains out better than just applying stain remover when you wash them).
