To loathe Christmas TV adverts and the competition to produce the best advert ?

I'm talking about the likes of large supermarket chains, M&S, John Lewis etc. All Christmas TV adverts now seem to need to have a story and meaning, they are no longer advertising the products. It's a competition for who can produce the most comforting, story-telling 1 minute advert which also incorporates some sadder scenes that see animals/children light up with joy & glow at the end of the advert as they all come together to be there for each other for the festive season.

URGH !

I hate all adverts. At least these are creative. I dislike seeing them less than I dislike seeing ordinary ones?

VickyEadieofThigh · 03/11/2023 12:15

I agree. They're nauseating and the fact that they appear from November 1st gives me the RAGE.

stormteacupandcake · 03/11/2023 12:16

There's not any worst than an ad for Christmas puddings and party food, can't see the issue. People talk about them, so it's working.

LubaLuca · 03/11/2023 12:23

I like them, I've enjoyed all my life. When I was little it was adverts for brands like Famous Grouse, DeBeers diamonds, Terry's Chocolate Orange and Quality Street that signalled the start of buying things for Christmas. I imagine John Lewis etc have the same trigger for children these days.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/11/2023 12:30

Much better than Verisure Alarms adverts.

LifesADance · 03/11/2023 12:33

I don’t get all the hype around them and mostly end up thinking what a load of shite. I think the Kevin the carrot ones are usually the best. Aldi I think?

Stroopwaffels · 03/11/2023 12:34

V easy to avoid adverts. If there's something you want to see on C4 or ITV or the other commercial channels you record it and fforward through the annoying ads.

MeAndStuart1981 · 03/11/2023 12:37

Anyone remember the one from a few years ago with the dog watching the fox and badger on the trampoline - more Christmas adverts like that one please!

No-one has to see a Christmas, or any other advert against their will, so YABU

buttercupcake · 03/11/2023 12:46

I feel exactly the same. Can’t stand the hype around them and actively try and avoid seeing them. Would impress me more if JL, M&S didn’t do one and donated the budget to charity instead. That would make me spend my money in their store.

emmetgirl · 03/11/2023 12:50

I hate them too. It's ridiculous the media attention they get. I don't watch any adverts on TV. I bloody hate Xmas anyway.

LadyBird1973 · 03/11/2023 12:56

If they take up space that would otherwise be used to guilt older people into buying funeral plans, then I'm all for them!

When I'm queen of the world I'm going to ban any advert which I feel exploits vulnerable people or preys on peoples fears - so no cremation shit or gambling ads.

I like Christmas adverts - they are full of sparkly stuff that makes me happy

Olinguita · 03/11/2023 12:59

I just really dislike how emotionally manipulative Christmas ads have become in recent years.

GoodToBeHome · 03/11/2023 13:06

I like them, I also like Christmas so I get the warm fuzzy feeling when they come on.
I've never spent a penny in JL and only use M&S if I get a voucher so I don't think they are overriding my free will with their emotional manipulation!

EscapeTheCastle · 03/11/2023 13:07

When the subject of Christmas adverts comes up I feel nostalgic for the ads from the old days. So I go on You Tube and watch things like Woolworths ones with celebrities singing madly "have a very Merry Woolworth Christmas" while they show us products like a pack of tapes for £4.99. It's all set in an actual Woolworths and couldn't be more different from today's adverts.

CoffeeCantata · 03/11/2023 13:47

I hate all adverts too and mute them if I get there in time!

Christmas ads are the second worst - the first being the holiday ones which start at tea-time on Christmas Day.

I love (sarcastic...) the ones where a huge family is sitting around a massive table which wouldn't fit into most people's homes with a Christmas dinner with all the courses on the table at once: turkey/trimmings/pudding/mince pies/trifle/chees board/buffet food etc - all in front of them at the same time. As if.

Also, the ones which show a big chain shop (Currys, PC World etc) in a pretty snowstorm with just one family going out/coming in for their lovely, relaxing Christmassy shopping. So ridiculously unrealistic when we know that actual Christmas shopping is like the seventh circle of hell with a million other rude, pushy, loud shoppers getting in our way and jostling us.

Nagado · 03/11/2023 18:39

I like them. As a pp said, I’d much rather see them than ads for alarm systems or pre paid cremations.

I even have a favourite (Sainsbury’s Christmas in a Day, the 48 minute version on You Tube which I’ll always watch if I find myself on YT, genuinely don’t care if anyone thinks I’m sad, it makes me happy).

Americano75 · 03/11/2023 18:53

I really like them, but wish to God they didn't start so early.

WeHaveChocIcesInTheFreezer · 04/11/2023 09:18

I actually quite like them and enjoy them as part of the Christmas build up; feels a bit grinch like to have such a dislike for them.

KeepJoggingOn · 04/11/2023 09:24

It's all been done to death, like everything else. I haven't had a tv for last 10 years and best thing l ever did, haven't missed having that kind of shit inflicted on me.
I think the big stores should just stop it altogether now, they are nothing but nauseating.

Westfacing · 04/11/2023 09:28

I don't mind what few I see but would have hated them to have been around when I was a child - we were very poor and Xmas was bleak.

They depict a fairy tale, sumptuous, cosy fantasy which is so not achievable for many families.

RafaFan · 04/11/2023 15:24

@buttercupcake Wouldn't they have to do an advert to announce this though, otherwise how would you know?

JCWiatt · 04/11/2023 16:57

I can't get upset about this. Bricks and mortar retailers are really struggling. Companies need to advertise (and emotive marketing is known to be highly successful). If this style of ad is the current on-trend format, then so be it.

jay55 · 04/11/2023 16:59

@EscapeTheCastle I love the old quality street ones. Or the bisto family wearing party hats.
