Time off work for UTI?

I’m pregnant, and have a UTI. I’ve got antibiotics but they’ve made me feel very sick and drowsy - I feel like I’ve relapsed to the first trimester again! I’m also trying to rest a bit so the infection doesn’t get any worse as I’m worried about the baby. I was already feeling a bit run down with the UTI. I normally do wfh and took today off sick and if I’m not feeling better think I will struggle with tomorrow too, WIBU to take another day sick for this? I feel guilty as a UTI doesn’t feel like a real illness!

Of course it’s a real illness.

I’ve only had a couple of UTIs in my life but both times I felt shocking and couldn’t have gone to work. Needed to pee constantly, peeing blood etc.

Not unreasonable at all, take the time to look after yourself and recover x

Honestly if you're not well you're not well. You're entitled to a day off if you're not well and really don't need strangers to confirm that for you. Not saying that in a snarky way - but please believe in your ability to know if you need time to recover. Of course it's a real illness!

I generally found the biggest problem when I had a UTI was the concept of not being near to a loo for half an hour to walk to work - I was able to WFH a bit though.

I’ve had utis that knocked me right off my feet so don’t feel bad for time off!

DustyLee123 · 02/11/2023 21:38

Of course, have a week off.

CandyLeBonBon · 02/11/2023 21:40

Well I've been in hospital twice with sepsis as a result of UTIs - not sure why anyone would think it's not something to be taken seriously

Mackeroo · 02/11/2023 21:41

UTIs are definitely real illnesses, very uncomfortable and unpleasant. Take the time off and recover properly.

lemmein · 02/11/2023 21:47

UTIs are evil - I absolutely would take time off work until it had eased off!

modgepodge · 02/11/2023 21:52

I once ignored a UTI and it turned in to a kidney infection. That made me feel REALLY ill, I definitely couldn’t have worked (was a student on holidays at the time). I personally have never been that sick with ‘just’ a UTI but you feel bad enough you need to take time off so that’s fine.

FeedMeSantiago · 02/11/2023 21:58

I have had frequent UTIs since I was 3.

There's no shame in taking time off sick if you need to. UTIs can be really awful. They can also develop into kidney infections which are very unpleasant and put you at risk of developing sepsis. I've had two kidney infections and they were horrendous.

Your health comes first, always. You're also pregnant. The best thing you can do is rest, recuperate and doing everything you can to let your body fight it off. Drink plenty of fluids to help flush it out. Don't feel guilty. If you ignore it and it gets worse you could make yourself even more unwell. Best to take a few days now and recover sooner.

If you feel rubbish, it doesn’t matter what the root cause is. If you’re feeling rotten from a UTI, you’re just as entitled to rest as you are if you’re feeling rotten from a stomach bug or a migraine or anything else.

My DP is prone to UTIs and the last time he had one, he felt incredibly rough and could hardly get out of bed - and the antibiotics then made him dizzy and sick. UTIs can be really grim.

A UTI is a 'real illness' - don't think it isn't! and being pregnant makes it worse- rest up and take your meds. I've realised after over 30yrs of working your employer won't really give a toss! I'm one who has refused sick notes for broken bones and limped in on crutches in severe pain - it takes longer to get better trying to soldier on.
