Daughter low white blood cells

sorry posting here for traffic

hi just looking for others experiences really and any knowledge.
My daughter is 9 and has been complaining of pain in neck and stomach for some time. Had a scan on neck and looks like that should be ok.
had a blood test and doctor has rung to say white blood cells are low. I’ve got the letter and it says they are 3.7. Neutrophil count is 1.6.

apparently they were low 2 years ago and the white blood cell count was 4.7 then although no one ever told us that.

now absolutely worried sick about leukaemia and have been told have to wait 2 months for another blood test. I cannot wait that long!anyone knowledgeable about how low these actually are for a 9 year old or any personal experience with this? Thank you!

I had similar with my DS when they were about the same age.
We went to the GP because he was complaining of stomach ache a lot and we have coeliacs on both sides of the family.
blood tests showed low white blood and neutrophil counts but I can’t remember the numbers.
we were put on a “watch”, so he had blood tests every 3 months - white cells always low until he had one test with normal result and he was suddenly discharged.
It’s 5 years later and he’s had no other health concerns.

I appreciate we’re just a sample of one, but thought I’d share our experience as I was as worried as you about potential leukaemia etc but it really was all fine in the end

Hi @Farmmum22 - I had years worth of worries with my DS being suspected of having leukaemia. He never did (thankfully!) but his symptoms were stomach ache, being pale / anaemic, enlarged lymph nodes (some are still raised a few years on) and non blanching (petechial) rashes. Eventually, he was diagnosed as coeliac but we had many, many blood tests / hospital admissions where we were told to brace ourselves for a leukaemia diagnosis.

What happened with us is that DS had to have regular blood tests (he would’ve been 1-7 years old) and we were monitored. He’s 10 years old now and, aside from the coeliac diagnosis and still enlarged lymph nodes (which our GP said is likely connected with his coeliac), he’s fine.

I know it’s worrying but try and keep calm - if she doesn’t have any of the other symptoms associated with leukaemia, it’s likely there may be a benign cause to her symptoms. Keep a diary of the pain / illnesses etc and that will give the GP a clear picture of how your daughter is generally.

Sending you unmumsnetty hugs x

I'd be worried sick as well. Would you be able to get her seen privately?

Such reassuring stories thank you @Poppsidoppsi and @ladyinthecampervan
