Hi, just wondered if anyone knows… is it possible to self test for anaemia at home? Are there finger prick tests available like glucose tests? I remember years ago donating blood and they seemed to have a finger prick checker but I wasn’t sure if it was something that was available to buy to self test? Just wondering as I think I may be anaemic but wasn’t sure if it was possible to self test or if it had to go via the GP instead. I understand that even if I could test it myself I would still need to go to the GP anyway if there was a problem but I just meant to quickly check it at home whilst waiting for an appointment. Thanks x

Hi @orangesquaash

From memory, the finger-prick test they do when you donate blood is a very simple check for haemoglobin levels only. You can buy kits online, but their accuracy isn't verified (search for 'AnaemiaScreen'). I think there are other types of home testing kit that require buying a hand-held device.

To diagnose anaemia, your G.P. will want to run a 'full blood count' (FBC) blood test.

Does your surgery use eConsult? I need to have monthly blood tests; I just put through a request for the form and it's ready the next day. I don't need to see or speak to my G.P. at all.

I hope you feel better soon.
