Poos at nursery

My DD has recently moved up from the baby room to the toddler room at nursery. Since then, at least 50% of the time I pick her up at the end of the day she has a big poo that's been left in her nappy. It's often quite dry and it's squished up towards her back suggesting it's been there a while. As we have a 20 minute drive home I always make a point of changing her at nursery.

I know they have lots of kids to attend to so inevitably miss some poos but it's every other day! It never happened in the baby room so am thinking it's a staff issue.

Would I be unreasonable to raise this with management or is it to be expected?

I don't want to piss off any of the staff who look after her in case they don't treat her as well as the others once they know I've complained.

I wouldn’t expect my child to be left with poo in their nappy at all during the day and I’d certainly expect it to be changed before I collected them. If it happened as a one off I wouldn’t mention it but if it’s happening repeatedly I definitely would.

I'd speak to them, poos especially need to be changed promptly otherwise they can cause really horrible skin soreness (as well as being uncomfortable for them). I'd highlight that often at pick up you can tell they've been left in a soiled nappy and ask what their procedures are for checking and changes- can be polite when raising it so shouldn't get their shackles up.

Definitely not acceptable, I’d speak to them and ask them what’s the plan for this not to continue. Does she get a sore bum with it?

Bedbynoon · 02/11/2023 10:52

Poor thing! Definitely raise it. If you think she won’t be treated nicely because you complained she was left in her own mess then move nurseries as the staff sound horrible if that’s the case.

Taylorswiftserastour · 02/11/2023 10:56

Definitely raise it. It doesn't matter how many kids they've got, they've got ratios for staffing and should be able to keep an eye (and nose) out for poos. DS has always been changed just before pick up so he was in a fresh nappy got home time.

No, in fact you should have raised it immediately. The second time at a push.

Tbh it's a sign of underlying laziness throughout the nursery as it takes several people to ignore the issue. If they aren't even looking after your child's most basic needs then I would question everything else that the nursery does in regards to education. I've done placements in lots of nurseries and there are definitely some where the employees spend the day gossiping and rarely interacting with the kids. I'm not saying yours is like this, but no nursery with responsible, caring employees would leave a child in that state.

Iamnotastick · 02/11/2023 11:16

wow thats a big fucking no. The ratio at that age is 1 to 3, how can that be too much for them to check and change a poo?!

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 02/11/2023 11:17

Fed up with the shit obsession on here

LadyMacB · 02/11/2023 11:20

You’re definitely not being unreasonable.

Clearly they are never going to be quite as on it as you would be at home, and I’d probably overlook a one off incident. But it shouldn’t be happening that often - suggests a general “can’t be arsed, it’s the end of the day” attitude.

Squirre · 02/11/2023 11:20

Definitely raise it. Poo in contact with skin can risk skin integrity. It might be she needs checking at regular intervals in the afternoon if it's not apparent she's gone. My red flags would be waving if they find it an issue that you ask.

If you think staff are going to mistreat your child because you advocated for her not sitting in shit then you need to change nursery......
