Would a temp of 40.4 freak you out for toddler ?

Some people would go to hospital for this kind of temperature.

My boy is 18 months and has had a temperature all day ( no other obvious symptoms).

Temperature was around 38-38.5 all day. I've been giving him paracetamol and ibuprofen. He's been lethargic when his fever was high but when the medicine kicked in, he'd be pretty happy.

Since this evening it's risen quite dramatically to 40.4 just now ( he did sleep on me so it made him hotter ).

He was wrenching a bit earlier, but no vomiting.

I have him medicine an hour ago, but temp has just risen ( but was also sleeping on me ). Anyway it went up to 40.4. I've now taken off his very thin top. His temperature is now 40.

Is a high temperature like this a reason to take them to a and e?

I think if it responds to medication it's probably ok.

Or am I being too relaxed about it ?

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and following through this illness with us.

He's woken up today ( had an extra long sleep ) - although woke up crying many times during the night, but no fevers- just really upset for ages.

Anyway now he has a blanching rash on his face mainly - neck too. Some on his chest. It could be Scarlett fever I guess. From the sore throat ? I'm not sure what the time line of symptoms is for scarlet fever. I just hope my 3 year old doesn't get it !

Are you sure it’s not a reaction to the penicillin if you started giving it to him considering an allergy was queried last time he had it?

Last time he had diarrhoea which caused nappy rash only. Not all over body rash like this one.

Also it he didn't have that reaction to penicillin. It was another antibiotic which contains penicillin.

But of course it's a good point to raise because it's always a possibility.

Well just keep an eye on it…

In some cases, secondary exposure to the drug can trigger an allergic reaction that is more severe than the first time the body was exposed to it.

When the body is first exposed to it, the body becomes very sensitised to it and then the second time the body is exposed to it the body will see it is a definite threat and have a more severe reaction to it.

And the more doses that are given the worse the reaction will get.

If the rash worsens or spreads, or becomes itchy or your son starts developing watery eyes and other hayfever type symptoms then it can indicate he is reacting to the penicillin so get medical advice before carrying on with the treatment. Have a Google of some images of Hives and see if they look similar to what your son’s rash looks like as that is a typical reaction to penicillin when there is a true allergy.

Hopefully it won’t be that though and it will just be an innocent viral rash.

Either way, I’m glad you feel that he is on the mend.

@Scottishskifun are you thinking of metanium?

That's the one! That stuff is magical!

@hookline re his rash it's possible (especially with the throat) but it's quite rough. The treatment is antibiotics so he's in a good place if it is. Both of mine also get a viral rash so it could also be that.
For your 3 year old just keep an eye out and checking their throat/tongue white spots and strawberry tongue.
Check yours too it's the season for Strep A and the white spots can indicate it.

Edited

He's had penicillin and amoxicillin a few times now and was ok. It was only amoxiclav or however you spell it, where he had severe diarrhoea.

I'll keep an eye on it, I suppose like you say- if it gets worse with more doses, I will mention it to the doctor.

@Scottishskifun I will keep an eye on her an pray she doesn't get sick.

I have had a sore throat on and off, with pain when swallowing. It's on an off though. It was pretty bad last night, but now it's not there.

I had a look last night and I could see my throat is red and I do have a couple of white spots. I looked again today and they've gone. I had some strepsils yesterday and also ibuprofen. My kids both had tonsillitis in the spring and I had it too that time. It's not nice, but better than a stomach bug with d and v.. which I've also caught from them a number of times. Im sure we've all been there..

Just been googling the typical scarlet fever rash and it says it's usually not on the face.

My son's rash is on his face and neck/ stomach too. Doesn't sound like the typical scarlet fever rash.

Could be a viral rash or a reaction to penicillin.

Op, my youngest daughter got scarlett fever and the rash was absolutely everywhere really awful. it was also on her face but not as bad as everywhere else. Let me try and find a picture

Littlecatonthefence · 06/11/2023 10:01
