Gaining weight whilst breastfeeding.

Are there any other women out there like me (and my relatives)?

I cannot lose weight whilst breastfeeding. It is so impossible. I actually gain weight. After birth, I lost a stone and then gained a stone when my milk came in!!!

Is this just me? ... I am a mum of 2. When I stopped bf with my first the weight came off so I know that this is the problem!

I tell myself that 200 years ago this would have been very protective for me but in this day and age with so much food... It definitely isn't.

I go massive round the hips and belly while breastfeeding. It's like every babushka in my Eastern European peasant genes is in there trying to get out 🤣

Haha! My sister says we become female wrestlers.

It is so true, I actually become so hench around the shoulders and arms! Thankfully I'm looking a bit smaller again.

I was the same with my first baby, but weight dropped off as soon as he weaned at about 1 year. Second time round weight dropped off me straight away! No idea why, didn't do anything different, both exclusively breastfed, just crazy postpartum hormones I guess.

I ate really well and was exercising and was so irritated by the weight will fall off you with BF. For me getting decent sleep made the biggest difference to weight loss but it wasn't until I stopped BF that I felt like body really recovered

"The weight will fall off when you stop bfing" comments are well meaning but unfortunately it just isn't the case for everyone. Sadly I was one of those it wasn't.

Yanbu. I didn't eat that much but sitting down all the time doesn't exactly help shift weight.

It's maths. If you're eating 3000 calories and the baby is consuming 500, you're still eating 1000 calories a day more than you should.

The weight 'magically falls off' people who are eating 1500-2000 calories.

Nope its way more complex than just maths. Hormones! They control everything in your body. And they definitely affect where your weight distribution is, and how you lose it.

Think of the 'middle age spread' phrase, where does that come from? It comes from women going through menopause and the hormone change affecting fat distribution.

I think all the crap bits of pregnancy/ post pregnancy are very similar to perimenopause. Weight on belly, losing hair.

So yes, excercise is always good, and not overeating is obviously a good idea, but becoming a mother is a monumentally big event in a woman's life, and it's not given enough credit.

My first 2 where boys, I lost a bit too much weight with breastfeeding. The last 2, where girls and i put on a lot.

I had all kids in 6 years but breastfed continuously for 10 years. So I was like a yoyo.

I have now stopped breastfeeding for just over a year and I think I have stabled out to my natural weight now.

🙋🏻‍♀️ solidarity! My eldest fed til 2, I couldnt lose weight no matter how much I tried (calorie deficit included!) while feeding. My now 6 month old is also breast fed and it's exactly the same story, so I'm not even going to try this time until she weans! I'm just going to embrace the extra layer of warmth over the winter 😂 enjoy the food and tackle it when she weans 🤷🏻‍♀️
