A Mumsnet advert uses a but I’d say an?

YABU it should be a because x isn’t a vowel
YANBU everyone says an Xmas cake/tree etc

Depends how you pronounce 'Xmas'.

I see Xmas but I say 'Christmas', thus I'd say 'a Xmas doormat'.

If I were the type to say 'Ecksmas' I'd take a big rock and kill myself.

Would the type who says Ecksmas be troubled by which indefinite article to introduce it with?

Perfect answer! 😂😂😂

I think they would. Everybody is troubled about which indefinite article to use. I accept some more than others, but I don't think we can rule anyone out in this discussion.

I’ve had my Xmarse handed to me by the results of the poll. Take heed fellow ecksmass sayers.

I wouldn't use the word Xmas, but if I was told to write the sentence it would be

An Xmas whatever. Just like I would write 'an hotel'

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/10/2023 17:13

YABU because Xmas is an abbreviated way of writing Christmas, but I'd still pronounce it as 'Christmas'. I've never in my life said 'Exmas'. It's not a proper word.

Academic theologians use X instead of Christ when writing, eg Xian for Christian but never say it as Ecks, it's always the full version. It would definitely make me grimace to hear it as Ecksmas
