Try it with the names of your own family. Change Kate for your Mum's name. It's easier that way.

Divide it into its parts. The second part says (my daughter’s mother), which is obviously “me”.

So if we substitute (me) for (my daughter’s mother) the riddle reads

If Kate’s daughter is (me) what am I to Kate? And the answer is clear.

Kate's daughter = daughter's mother
Kate's daughter = me or my wife
Kate = Kate's daughter's mother = my mum or my mother-in-law
Me = Kate's daughter or Kate's son-in-law (but son-in-law is not an option here)
