Trick or treat

Met up with a friend today and got talking about kids going trick or treating tomorrow. She told me that both her and her husband both go out with the kids for an hour or so.2 hours max. They live in a big estate. By the time they get home most kids have been and gone so they go through the bags and take out the good stuff they like and give back out whatever they don't like.
I thought that was a bit mean spirited of them. Willing to take but not give..
Myself and my dh have always taken it in turns to go with ds so there is always someone home to open the door..

Nope, I never fancied it much as a child either. My mum was generous when it came to sweets though, they were already in my house so no need to go out begging.

Ok each to their own I guess.

I find the difference between ‘mum giving you sweets’ and trick or treating for kids a similar to taking your kid to the shops and buying their gift in front of them to have right then, or Santa coming on Xmas morning.
Can’t compare the two. One is a bit joyless.

Are your friends skint or just tight?

She came across as really tight. She said it in a bragging tone. I was saying my dh was on late shift for Halloween so my ds will probably only do a few houses on my road where I can watch him from my garden but still be able to give out the sweets to the kids going around. It's a small cul de sac. She then said "we both go with the kids so we won't be there to deal with the hoards of kids knocking, we turn all lights out and make sure we have kids out of the house trick or treating before the other kids go around. We are normally the first out. We really drag it out for a couple of hours. Kids get loads then when we go home we go through the bags and Anything we don't like we give that out to any kids who knock in late but that could be only a couple of kids. It's great my kids get loads and we don't spend a penny. Win win for my house"

I'm not comparing, I was happy with what I had. I had a very joyful childhood.
