To ask for a pay rise?

I work for a non profit, the project I manage is coming to an end and we're in the final stages of applying for funding a second phase of the project. Funding will cover the whole project for 5 years including my salary.

My manager and I are working on the budget for the funding at the moment, including setting my wage for the duration.

This year I received a 3% pay rise. AIBU to request a higher salary, as I will have been instrumental to conception of this second phase and responsible for seeking and (hopefully) securing the funding for it? Obviously the money isn't coming out of my managers pocket as the project is externally funded, but I don't know how to broach the subject.

Presently the salary calculation is my current salary plus 3% each year. AIBU to think that the skills and development I've shown in extending the project and securing its funding warrant a pay rise?

Don't ask , don't get

The worst that can happen is they say no, so yes ask away.

I would certainly ask.

Yes I would ask. I’d frame it that a salary plus an assumed cost of living increase each year seems fair but your current salary was reflective of the skills and experience you had when that salary was awarded. This feels like the right time to set what your salary should be going forward now you have the extra experience and skills, it’s like asking to be promoted in an environment where you have say an administrator and a senior administrator or move up the spinal points of somewhere graded.

It's always worth asking. The worst that can happen is they say no, which is exactly where you'd be if you didn't ask.

Now is the time to do it. The 5 year budget will be approved or rejected based on its own merits, not by how much is in for your salary. If you're only getting 3% / yr for 5 years you need to build in a big jump now while you have the chance.

Thanks to those who've replied - I really appreciate the back up! I find it so hard to have these conversations at work
