Not a long-term user here, but have responded to several posts recently that have gone on to be removed or temporarily held. One of them I could understand, as some of the content was getting rather vitriolic and discriminatory. But there's been a couple of others which I just couldn't see an issue with. The most recent example was a post today about a Mum who didn't want her children going anywhere near the sea. As an ex. lifeguard, I penned quite a lengthy reply on this and now the whole thread has disappeared in a puff of smoke. I read most of the comments on it and I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything unduly controversial.

I'm just curious to know, aside from the obvious reasons, why some posts are removed or held 'while background checks are made' (I think that's what the sea swimming post said)?

@TheShellBeach @Sebsaloysius I 'm struggling to see how using hand sanitizer on a train could be remotely controversial. MN can be a strange place at times.

love your username btw @Sebsaloysius . Just come over here from a thread where Brideshead Revisited is rather heavily featured.

It was the accusation of racism which caused the furore.

applepieandtea · 30/10/2023 15:47

Also remember a few years ago my friend got her account deleted because she was a troll she posted about kicking her son out because he was attacking her.
She was turned on so badly called all sorts of names and why lie bad mother etc.
She was in fact in hospital getting stitches she never made another account.
But she is doing ok now.
To many on MN judge others.
And men can can never be right about anything.
If your 10 year partner as sworn at you its once its abuse.
But if your child is putting you in hospital your the bad mother.
MNHQ need to look at some of the posters a bit more because there are some bullies on here.

Ah... if I could go back in time to a fictional scenario, it would most definitely be as Aloysius and spend my life nestled under Anthony Andrew's arm!

The hand sanitiser was implying racism.

It appears swimming is a current troll topic...

My thread was taken down today and I still don't know why

Email mnhq, but I know which thread it is and it was certainly not unreasonable that people were questioning it…

GodDammitCecil · 30/10/2023 16:25

A surprisingly large number of people think coming onto MN and trolling a load of mums constitutes a good time.

God only knows why. Clearly wouldn’t know an actual good time if it hit them about the head.

It's ridiculous now anyone could read racism into a scenario like that. Anyone would think we hadn't just come through a pandemic which killed people.

It was because the man who handed the OP her tea was black.

There is a big issue with trolls and AI posts. There are other forums that post about MN and try and post ludicrous scenarios to elicit response.

After a while they become easier to spot, however recently it appears to be especially bad, which actually is good for me as I'm on here less.

How can you spot the AI posts?

CasaAmarela · 30/10/2023 16:40

HelloItsMeHowAreYou · 30/10/2023 14:50

I just get fed up with the " we are looking behind the scenes" MN post. I have never seen one reinstated in the 15 years I have been here. Surely not ALL can be trolls?

One was taken down and reinstated a few weeks ago. The OP was saying her nose got bigger and she became ugly after pregnancy.

DeadBugMountainClimber · 30/10/2023 16:46

Very often the AI posts just chunter to themselves, any replies are generic rather than tailored to particular posts and posters. They also do things like mix up cultural references.

Pure word salad. Far too many details, real flowery writing style. Waffly.

I have emailed them. And it happened so I don't know what else I can say

supernoodletrain · 30/10/2023 20:37

Was anyone else on the one where the woman wanted her husbands parents to contribute for a fridge instead of buying his stuff from white company?

TheShellBeach · 30/10/2023 16:38

It was because the man who handed the OP her tea was black.

I would always sanitize my hands after someone served or handed something to me I wouldn't care what their colour was. If their feelings are hurt that's sad but I'm not gonna put my health at risk (even flu is dangerous to someone like me) because someone feels bad. I know racism exists but It's not like we still living in colonial times.
