Dog causes over €1000 fine

My scary breed dog breed is confined to our relatively large space with secure gates. One of gates was left open and in that instant was triggered by a passing cyclist. Absolutely, my dog, my problem. This experienced older cyclist got a severe fright, bike and himself crashed to ground. He has 2 significant scrapes and bike had damage (in my own shock I did not examine it) I was totally owning the situation completely apologetic and helped this man with disinfectant etc. He threatened me with millions very quickly and I'd lose my house hence my extra shock. He reported me and the dog to the guards. I've been looking at re homing her.
Today I received a text that he is well but to pay 1000 for a new bike and 100 for antibiotic etc. I've no problem paying what is due, 1000 is not millions, but to me I also cant even afford 1000, what checks should I make first and would I be unreasonable as it was my dog and my gate?

He sounds like a bit of a wimp. An experienced cyclist would know how to get out of this
What utter nonsense! A dog that runs for your feet barking is going to unsettle any cyclist, experienced or not, especially if wearing click in cycling shoes so you can't even kick the dog out of the way. Is it wimpy to try to avoid what could have been a violent dog going for you, really well 🙄

If the dog didn’t bite him I’d tell him where to go
Oh so it's his fault for trying to avoid a dog that could have attacked him and do much more damage? Should he have just continue to pedal nicely and wait to see if the dog was going to rip his foot off?

Especially if you were being difficult and or uncooperative.

Which the OP isn't. She's not saying she won't pay but why shouldn't she have proof before handing over any money? She needs to give him the insurance details and let them deal with it.

Webex · 01/11/2023 12:41

Definitely go through the insurance and text them to ask for their details. saying your going through insurance if they are trying it on that might make them quickly change their mind!

I agree OP should go through their insurance - that is what it's there for. I don't understand why you think this would make the cyclist change his mind. I'd be encouraged by someone having insurance as I would then know that the money is there. Much easier than having to enforce a court order against an individual.

Firstly.
why are you even thinking about rehoming your pet over a man who you do not know, and who wants 1000€ for bike repairs/new bike, if and it’s a big if as in your shock you didn’t check it for damages, it is damaged, the very most I would do is pay for a third party bike tech to inspect it.

secondly, did this man just text you demanding this money? And 100euro for antibiotics? Sorry? Was he admitted to A+E and put on an IV ? If not then he is a chancer.

do you have insurance? Go through them, and only them, do not hand any money over.

@Keepingthingsinteresting don't know why you've quoted me in your statement about walking your dog. The only thing is common is have is we both mention cyclists.

However, yea, turn it into a cyclist bashing thread if that's what floats your boat. This thread is about a DOG.
