To think I might be pregnant on the copper coil

I’m aware nobody on the internet can tell me if I’m pregnant and plan to go get a test as soon as I can later today but am just wondering if anyone has ever got pregnant while on the coil?

Had DD at the start of the year and the coil fitted soon after. I’ve never been able to feel the strings. My cycles are usually 34 ish days long and I’m currently on day 40 odd I think. That in itself isn’t unusual as I have PCOS and when I’m not managing it my cycles are erratic. What’s making me panic a little is the fact that over the last week or so I’ve been feeling dizzy and sick and my stomach is turned at the thought of certain foods (the same foods as when I was pregnant). It’s also have that weird starving but sick at the same time feeling.

Surely the chances of me being pregnant when I have PCOS and have the coil fitted are slim to none. Has this happened to anyone else?

It has happened twice to women in my family. I hope that's news you wanted to hear!

Flyingalone · 30/10/2023 09:27

Really don't think you're pregnant. Honestly when I was TTC the amount of women saying 'I'm off the food, I'm nauseous' etc. - and a lot would get their period later.

Why don't you go and do a test?

I have copper coil. They're very effective.

My nurse mentor gave birth to her third child who had her coil in his hand. As a nursing student I knew this to happen to one of my patients. There have been a few threads on this over the years with women saying they have been pregnant with a copper coil.

@Flyingalone I’m sure you’re right. I can’t get out till lunchtime but will get a test then and take it this afternoon.

I’ve been pregnant 5 times (2 DC and 3 late ish losses) so I feel like I know what it feels like but I think perhaps the idea has popped into my head and now I’ve panicked and got carried away.

I felt weird and oddly not myself at all on the copper coil, even though it is supposed to be your own hormones, and got IBS, had a cervical and ovarian cancer scare and developed endometriosis in the five years I had one. Artificial hormones all the way, for me!

I didn't think that was possible?!

Singinghollybob · 30/10/2023 10:51

I mean a baby being born holding a coil.

I've had copper coils for nearly 20 years.

2 have fallen out and one of those I didn't notice (must've gone down the toilet), but one was just about due to be changed and the other was nearly a year late due to Covid.

A friend of mine did get pregnant with her coil though, not sure how. Perhaps it wasn't properly in place?

Jamandmarmaladeandjelly · 30/10/2023 10:55

Happened to a friend of mine. She now has a three year old, 4th child!

Do a test if your period doesn't come

It isn't possible - the baby would still be inside the gestational sac and the coil wouldn't be. It's just scaremongering bullshit that teenagers like to trot out, although as with any contraception there's a small chance of getting pregnant with the copper coil.

Misssassy89 · 30/10/2023 11:04

It's possible. I'm sure if you are you need to get it out ASAP. Can cause ectopic

My aunt got pregnant aged 45 with copper coil in place, pregnancy discovered week 22…

Hecate01 · 30/10/2023 11:17

I've had the copper coil for years and it's worked for me, no contraception is 100% guaranteed though.

Yes and this twat didn't help.

She clearly shoved the coil in baby's hand.

Women needn't worry though as official figures reveal the device is 99 per cent effective
