To be annoyed that pre-school DC watch 12 rated films?

Ongoing disagreement as to the suitability of pre-schoolers watching 12 rated films, especially Marvel franchises etc. The characters are marketed to children at such a young age, so DC wants to watch and family member introduced and facilitates. What do other families do? AIBU?

I don't put any stock into ratings and use my own judgement based on the film and the particular child.

Pre-school as in 4-5 year olds? Or do you mean primary?

Leavestumble · 29/10/2023 10:02

Thanks, pre-school as in 3-4.

Depends on the film. A lot of Marvel films are 12A so technically okay as long as there's a parent/adult present.

Legendairy · 29/10/2023 10:29

My DC watched lots of Marvel and Star Wars films at that age, they have always loved them. We always watched the films first.

It depends on the child IMO (and of course the film)

Legendairy · 29/10/2023 10:30

I wouldn't be happy about people showing my DC films without checking though.

TookTheBook · 29/10/2023 10:31

Absolutely not unreasonable. Ours haven't watched them. They can still enjoy the characters without seeing the film.

Use Common Sense Media website reviews to inform your opinion - it usually explains why a film is/isn't suitable for young kids

@Legendairy "I wouldn't be happy about people showing my DC films without checking though."

I'm assuming the children concerned are with them when this happens.

CurlewKate · 29/10/2023 10:34

@Legendairy sorry- "children concerned's father"

purpleme12 · 29/10/2023 10:34

I would complain.
Once after school care let my child watch a 12 film.
I complained and it didn't happen again.

As she said family members I assumed it was the wider family. Bit trickier if it's their dad then.

Universalsnail · 29/10/2023 10:41

I only vaguely follow age ratings as a guide. I'd watch each film first and decide if I think it would be appropriate or not.

purpleme12 · 29/10/2023 10:51

Oh sorry assumed it was childcare. Don't know why.
Yes I do go by the age ratings.
Yes her dad has let her watch some marvel films which are 12 which I don't agree with.
I have said that but ultimately I can't do anything. He doesn't listen.
