To pull out of house sale

I put an offer in for a house, 3% under the asking price. They said they wanted the weekend to think about it. So far so good. No problem with that at all.

Then, a few days later they have said they will only accept my offer if an offer they they have made on a house is accepted.

Has anyone else ever had this? I feel like I'm just left hanging. It just feels unreasonable and makes me want to withdraw my offer.
I've moved a lot over the years, about 7 house purchases and have never had this. If everyone did this you'd never complete a chain.

My house is sold so thought I was in a good position.

Am I being unreasonable?

Presumably they can only accept a lower bid if their offer is accepted. It's entirely up to you if you want to wait or withdraw your bid.

I had this with my first house. Owner wouldn't accept my offer until she had an offer accepted somewhere. It took 2 weeks, it was horrible waiting!

Londonrach1 · 28/10/2023 21:19

I still be viewing other houses...sounds like they can only afford to move if they just reduction on house they viewing

ScribblingPixie · 28/10/2023 21:22

They're not sure yet if your offer is going to make financial sense to them. It sounds reasonable enough to me.

Imagwine · 28/10/2023 21:22

Although it’s a pain for you, I can see why they need to know whether they can afford to accept 3% below.

PastorCarrBonarra · 28/10/2023 21:24

They sound honest. They could have accepted your offer and then breezily pulled out if the vendors of the house they wanted refused their offer. Instead, they have been candid and transparent.

I think they’d be good people to deal with tbh. I would not withdraw.

How old are you, @Foxyfriends, out of interest? I’m still hovering on the brink of one house purchase! Sounds like I need to take a leaf out of your book…

It's not unreasonable but I can see why you feel like you are left hanging.

At least they are being open and apparently honest. Hopefully it won't be long before they get an answer and can then confirm with you.

They obviously need to know if they can afford your offer, based on if their offer is accepted. Makes total sense.
