Three mice seen in a bedroom last night. No signs of how they could access the bedroom other than under the door. No services available over the weekend. Any advice?

Get traps. Nice squeeze into incredibly small spaces and they will come into warm homes when they can.

VickyEadieofThigh · 28/10/2023 09:55

Three all at once or possibly one three times?

You need to check everywhere in the house for signs of their activity - then get some traditional traps and put them bear those places (make sure they're not within reach of any children or pets, obviously).

fourelementary · 28/10/2023 09:57

i couldn’t bring myself to use traditional traps so get humane ones instead and let the mice go in an industrial estate. But if I had 3 I might have to get the boxed ones where you don’t see the splatted mouse…

fourelementary · 28/10/2023 09:58

But why would services not be available over the weekend? Pretty sure they work weekends- just not local authority (who cost money anyway!)

BigFatLiar · 28/10/2023 09:58

We had mice for a while, attracted by OH keeping wild bird food in the kitchen. We now have the electronic plug in rodent repellers. Takes a week or two to wife but haven't had mice since.

MaryJanesonabreak · 28/10/2023 10:00

Go to screwfix or b&q and get either mouse traps or the poison and the little boxes they go into. When I moved into my renovation house last winter there was so much vermin I was sweeping up their droppings in vast swathes from under the kitchen cabinets.
If you can’t deal with dead mouse in a trap, go for the poison route.
Obviously, if you have children or pets be very careful of where you place the poison.
They really like peanut butter so I poured the oil from the top on to the little sachets. The effect was fairly instantaneous.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/10/2023 10:04

The ones we had last year had come through the floorboards and nibbled through a corner of carpet to get into the bedroom.

Can you book a council pest control appointment online? That's what we did. Was an upfront payment of about £75 I think. He put poisons down that were safe for animals/kids. Then if that doesn't clear them within 3 visits they put down a stronger poison hidden away.

I think it cost us about £150 to sort but he came about 4 or 5 times.

We found the electronic plug in things didn't work at all and the cat didn't care about the mice.

We tried traps before we called pest control and they only worked briefly as they get wise to them very quickly.

KathieFerrars · 28/10/2023 10:21

Electronic traps. Zaps them instantly.

Otterspotterspocket · 28/10/2023 10:22

Were they using white canes? Dark glasses?

(Sorry, I'm leaving)

Strawberryjams · 28/10/2023 10:28

I’ve had mice before and stupidly terrified me. I actually thing mice are beautiful but the fear at night until they were gone was horrible.
I put peppermint on cotton wool balls and placed in the corners of the room and any small spaces. I also did this up the side of our stairs as ours had only been spotted downstairs. We put traps down along the walls behind beds, sofa, fridge basically anywhere. They were all caught fairly quickly.
Mice can squeeze in the smallest of gaps go round the exterior of your house and fill any holes with those wire sponge things and then seal. We put the wire in a larger hole in the floor under the stairs too we’re the electrical boxes were.

Devilsmommy · 28/10/2023 10:56

@Strawberryjams do they not like peppermint then? Didn't know that one. Have had a loathing of mice since I was a teenager when one ran over my bare foot😫

Purplesilkpyjamas · 28/10/2023 12:30

Thanks everyone will try to get peppermint oil today and order traps and sonar thing. I have found an entry point at the corner of the bedroom and put wire wool there. There were 3 poos there too.
Is it worth getting a company in?

Strawberryjams · 28/10/2023 12:36

@Devilsmommy I found it out via google whilst I was frantically searching for what to do! No idea if it works but we did get rid of them very quickly thankfully!

How long do you think a mouse will survive on an industrial estate - or any strange new environment where they don't know where to find food/water/shelter? A quick death is kinder.

WhatNoRaisins · 28/10/2023 12:38

I'd also do some decluttering and vacuuming and then just leave out traps. All a company would do is put down traps though they could give advice on how best to place them.

dewisant2020 · 28/10/2023 12:54

I've had the same problem, to be honest I got a local pest control in as I wanted it sorted and fast for my own mental health.
Touch wood I haven't heard anything for a few weeks now but I live in constant fear they will be back

Cannas · 28/10/2023 13:00

Most councils don't do any pest control now, even for a fee.
Plenty of private pest control firms about, look on local FB group.
Sonar don't work.
There are more than three mice......

We've had mice before and get rats in the roof so I am on first name terms with our pest control man.

Sahara123 · 28/10/2023 13:04

I use peppermint oil on cotton wool in my greenhouse , it stops mice decimating my pea seedlings !
Our cats bring in many mice in various states , I just throw them out and accept that they’ll be back ..
Although one did live quite happily in my utility room for some time without me knowing, nice nest of tea towels and endless supply of cat food 🙄
But yes, try peppermint oil !

Hankunamatata · 28/10/2023 13:06

Snaptraps in every room along the sitting boards. There will be more

Hankunamatata · 28/10/2023 13:07

Skirting not sitting

FucksSakeSusan · 28/10/2023 13:09

If they're in your house, wire wool and peppermint oil will do fuck all. I tried humane traps when we had a problem but realised that they are immensely stressful when they're stuck in there for a whole night AND you need to take them something like 2 miles away to prevent them finding their way back. Poison is a horrible way to die and potentially poisons anything that eats them if they venture outside (think owls, foxes, people's cats). We ended up using snap traps because at least they're a quick way to die.

😂😂😂

1990thatsme · 28/10/2023 13:11

I bait traps with chocolate as our local rodents seem to prefer this to peanut butter.

Along skirting boards or sides of furniture. Wire wool to stop them returning. My neighbour is a chronic bird feeder so we are stuck with mice/rats for the foreseeable.

Correct. So-called "humane" traps just salve the conscience of the squeamish - but the rodent usually suffers far more from them.

Intruiged · 28/10/2023 13:15

Wire wool and peppermint oil on cotton wool worked for me. Haven't seen a mouse in 18 months.
