To want a heater in child's bedroom?

Just that really. There's no radiator, and while there was an electric heater when we viewed the landlord removed it before we moved in. We've asked for a heater a fortnight ago and not yet had a reply. Private rental via estate agent.

If the heater was not on the inventory when you moved in then it’s something you need to purchase. Nothing to do with the landlord.

Sycamoretrees · 28/10/2023 07:17

You're not being unreasonable to want a heater, but it is something you will need to source and buy your self. Just consider what type so it is safe for use in a child's room.

Yanbu. Does the LL deal with maintenance queries or is it the EA?

You'll end up with awful damp and mould issues

It's unusual to have a bedroom with no heating source. It could encourage damp or mould so a landlord should be keen to sort that out.

Purplerain0505 · 28/10/2023 07:19

We don’t have heating in our rented house so had to buy our own heaters. We went for a little oil filled one for DS bedroom and it does the job well.

Tourmalines · 28/10/2023 07:25

If it’s not built in they do not need to supply portable heaters .

Vettrianofan · 28/10/2023 07:26

Check the inventory list and if it's not on that, head out and buy one yourself. Sounds very unusual for a bedroom.

Dufflebag · 28/10/2023 07:28

It's UK law for the landlord to provide heating in occupied rooms - are pp in UK?

OP posts:
Dufflebag · 28/10/2023 07:29

@crimsonleaves yes exactly - quite apart from the law it makes sense to protect the property

I really hope that the people commenting on this thread are not LL because they seem to have no understanding of their legal obligations with regard to heating a property.

margotrose · 28/10/2023 07:35

It seems a few people aren't aware of the law - all occupied rooms in rented accommodation must be heated and the landlord is responsible for that.

OP - YANBU.

sorrynotathome · 28/10/2023 07:37

What is your AIBU then? If the law says you must have a heater, you must have a heater. What do you want us to say?!

Apossum · 28/10/2023 07:38

Well YANBU but if they’re dragging their feet, I’d crack on and buy a little oil fired heater myself. Keep pushing them then if you like but I’d not leave my child cold just to make a point to a landlord.

Aliceinnorthernland · 28/10/2023 07:39

I'd just buy a heater and send the invoice to your landlord and suggest it's taken off your rent.

Well, I think she wants support because her landlord is breaking the law.

Ilovegoldies · 28/10/2023 07:44

Contact your environmental health team at your local council. You should have a heater.

Dufflebag · 28/10/2023 07:44

Yes exactly @margotrose and @sorrynotathome this is my AIBU - I should have said I was in the UK - is it unreasonable to expect the law to be followed? It should seem a redundant question but it doesn't feel like one to me as a tenant.

@theunbelievabletruth thank you for this link

That’s poor considering he could order off Amazon or Argos and get it delivered
can’t be more than £30

Dufflebag · 28/10/2023 08:12

So sorry to clarify it is a genuine AIBU and I would be interested to know why people think it is unreasonable (glib memes notwithstanding)
