Trivial disagreement with DH about how he puts spread on toast

evildan · 27/10/2023 11:44

My DH spends time getting the spread (marmite, peanut butter, jam etc) right to the very edge of the toast. I think he is being unreasonable because there's no way of picking up the toast by the edges without getting spread on your fingers. He says he's not because this way every bit of toast has delicious spread on it.

I leave a margin of approx half a cm around the edges, so you can pick up the toast without getting dirty fingers. Particularly important when you have young children who tend to touch everything with sticky fingers before you ahev chance to clean them! DH says my way is so wrong because you miss out on spread.

Am I being unreasonable here?

You're bang out of order Op. People like you are the reason why I don't eat crusts.

Poudretteite · 29/10/2023 13:52

YABVVVU.
Nothing worse than dry edges.

AuntieDolly · 29/10/2023 13:57

How is he with cheese on toast? It's like an episode of the Krypton Factor with my husband methodically laying out the cheese to cover every part of the toast. I can't watch as I'm very slapdash, but no burnt edges 😊

EveryOtherNameTaken · 29/10/2023 13:57

With DH 100%

ThereIbledit · 29/10/2023 14:02

If the real butter isn't dripping through the saturated piping hot toast then neither of you are doing it right.

I think cheese on toast has different rules to jam on toast.

Cheese must be right to the edges, or you get sad dry burnt bits Like I often do because I'm not very good at what I preach about.

Jam, butter, peanut butter etc needs a small margin around the edges for easy handling. You don't need that for cheese on toast because you eat it with a knife and fork.

Totally with your DH. Right to the edges , and pick up by the sides. Your hands don’t get sticky/greasy!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/10/2023 14:39

I spread it to the edges although I don't get to eat it anymore as on a diet 😢

thecoat · 29/10/2023 14:40

Why do you care?

WhateverMate · 29/10/2023 14:41

It'll make zero difference to the kids, as they'll probably get it on their fingers anyway.

Bobbotgegrinch · 29/10/2023 15:18

I'm with your husband. You just pinch the corner at the sides to pick it up and then get no marmite on your fingers.

Wow I've never known anyone to eat cheese on toast with a knife and fork.

But on the other point yes got to spread butter to the edges

DappledThings · 29/10/2023 16:44

TeamDH. Dry edges are always a disappointment

DilemmaDelilah · 29/10/2023 16:51

The butter (or other spread) and marmite/jam/honey/marmalade/chocolate spread needs to go all the way to the edge!!!! Who wants a mouthful of dry toast. My DH puts the butter and the other topping on in lumps so that you can get a mouthful of dry toast or just butter or just jam OR (very rarely) a delicious mouthful with the right amount of everything on it. He SAYS he likes the unpredictability and variety, I think he is just too lazy to bother.....

PocketSand · 29/10/2023 17:15

I have been low carbing for decades so have no recent experience but I used to load with real butter and then fold - any delicious melted drips were wiped up by crusts.

I have the opposite argument with my husband. He puts a blob in the middle so most of the toast is dry.

Divorce. LTB. You don't need this level savageness in your life. You're worth so much more.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/10/2023 23:12

I'm with you actually OP but not in blazing row territory.

I was just pointed to this thread by a MN post on Facebook, and I'd like to say thank you @evildan because you sparked a really happy childhood memory Smile

Many moons ago our parents were away and grandparents were staying to babysit us kids. One morning when I was particularly grumpy/missing my mum during breakfast dgf picked up a piece of toast, holding the flat part and began to spread around the perimeter. Always cool, calm and collected dgm blew her top! Could almost see the steam from her ears "FULL NAME!! I said spread the butter TO the edges, not ON the edges!" We all fell about laughing, I assume that's the height of hilarity when you're 5 Grin

CasperGutman · 30/10/2023 10:04

I'm with your husband. My partner never spreads anything on the outer cm of a slice of toast - then gets annoyed with the children for being 'fussy' and leaving the crusts! 🤔

YABVVVU. Nothing worse than dry edges.

I know! It's actually scientifically proven to be worse than Bubonic Plague!

billyt · 30/10/2023 10:19

Full coverage here.

I've even returned to get more butter etc. if I sit down and realise I've missed a bit.

olderbutwiser · 30/10/2023 10:25

Madness to waste time fiddling with the edges unless you are that terrible thing an Edge Nibbler (and if he's an Edge Nibbler then you just have to LTB).

Crucial to toast enjoyment is minimising the lapsed time between toaster and gob - you only need time for a swift liberal swipe of Real Butter + topping of your choice.

It's all going down the same way, as my dear Mum used to say.

Newestname002 · 30/10/2023 11:42

Your husband is quite right - particularly with butter. And I like my bread toasted a certain shade of brown ("well done!" Which improves the taste) and butter/topping applied whilst the bread is hot enough to burn my fingers. This is even more important with toasted fruit scones (halved before putting in the toaster) so the butter sinks through the scone. Eat whilst still hot so you get a mix of crispy plus buttery succulence - just amazing. Don't know it till you try it!! 🌹
