To save extra hour in bed

A friend told me years ago that she saves her extra hour in bed when the clocks go back. She carries on as normal on Sunday - getting up and going to bed as usual - but then uses the extra hour on a work day. Am I being unreasonable to do the same?

So she just goes to bed an hour earlier the following night?

Am I being unreasonable to not understand how 'saving' the extra hour works? Lol

Aphroditee · 27/10/2023 10:37

So if she normally gets up at 7;00am Monday she’ll have a lie in and get up at 8;00am instead because the clocks went back in the early hours of Sunday?

Am I being thick but what is the point in that???

Blarn · 27/10/2023 10:41

I really don't understand it. I can't work out how the hour is kept for the following day

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/10/2023 10:42

Do what you like.

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/10/2023 10:42

😕

allhellcantstopusnow · 27/10/2023 10:45

I mean, she's absurd, but whatever gets her through the week I suppose..:

anon199900 · 27/10/2023 10:48

This is so weird!!

Somethingsnappy · 27/10/2023 10:48

What does she/will you use the extra hour for on a work day?

Somethingsnappy · 27/10/2023 10:49

Ah, sorry, just seen that it's to sleep. Well, why not?

Coffeerum · 27/10/2023 10:52

but then uses the extra hour on a work day.

That isn't how it works. She's just getting up an hour earlier on Monday.

35965a · 27/10/2023 10:54

That seems too much of a faff. Just change the clocks before you go to bed on Saturday night and carry on with life

HippyChickMama · 27/10/2023 10:58

I don't understand how this works but it made me think of this Viz tip

To save extra hour in bed

My Dad used to do this. Kept all of the clocks the same on the Sunday and “moved” the time change to the Monday so he felt he’d had an extra hour in bed. More tricky now so many clocks update automatically though.

DeireadhFomhair · 27/10/2023 11:05

I too don't understand this 😕

whataboutthedog · 27/10/2023 11:09

I sort of get it - you usually get the extra hour in bed on a Sunday because the clocks change at 2am going back to 1am. So if you do it on the Monday instead you feel the benefit then - but I totally get it will be harder as most of my clocks adjust automatically as well. I hadn't thought of that 😂.
(And I love the Viz post 😂)

Seems fine and I agree that a Monday am lie in/slow start will be better appreciated. Why would you be unreasonable to do the same? Do what suits you.

Main problem I can see is that if you're in England/Wales and you want to go the supermarket fairly early on Sunday morning and your inner clock says it's 10 am but theirs is 9 am and they don't open for another hour.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2023 11:19

It's the crops in the fields and the plants in our gardens I feel sorry for. All this mucking about with the time must affect their growing patterns.

Iwasafool · 27/10/2023 11:24

I generally let my bodyclock adjust, so I might have a bit of a lie in on Sunday, maybe go to bed a bit later by the clock but a bit earlier by my bodyclock, Monday feels like I'm a bit more awake as my body clock is telling me it is later than it is.

I don't need to formalise it, just let my bodyclock sort it. Harder when the clocks go forward as if you've got to get up for work on monday and the clock says 7 am but your body feels like it is 6 am it isn't pleasant.

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/10/2023 11:25

My body clock is buggered anyway, working nights and I happen to be working this weekend.

So she just goes to bed an hour earlier on the Sunday? The clock says 9pm but because she got up as normal, it feels to her like 10pm (and maybe that's what it says on her manual clocks/watch). So she goes to bed and gets a bit more sleep than normal?

ManyMaybes · 27/10/2023 11:39

So basically she is just going to bed an hour earlier on Sunday to get an extra hour of sleep?

Does she realise she can do this… any night of her life?

Frabbits · 27/10/2023 11:57

But you'd spend all of sunday thinking it's the wrong time....?

whataboutthedog · 29/10/2023 23:26

Well in the end I decided it was unreasonable so didn’t save it - but now wished I had 🤣 .
