Vaping on public transport should be punished by public shaming!

I have noticed an increase of people vaping on busses, majority of are teenagers/young adults.
I'm an ex smoker myself I get you crave that nicotine hit but NEVER have I considered sparking one up in a bus! I also vaped and yeah you can go 45 mins without it.

it's not like we just came out of a pandemic and people's health is fragile as it is. Vaping on the bus is just otherly selfish, arrogant and shows absolute disregard to people around you.

I have told someone off before who sat behind me on a packed bus vaping while there was also a family with small children in close proximity but it fell on deaf ears which doesn't surprise me tbh.

I witnessed an argument between an OAP and schoolboy where the boy refused to stop vaping and insults were exchanged.

I've seen it now regularly on my morning commute.

It just pisses me off and I don't know what to do. I've considered telling the bus driver but what is he gonna do? Can he kick them off the bus?

Am I overreacting and should just mind my own business?

Or HELL YEAH these people need to check themselves and change their behaviour?

It shouldn't be acceptable on public transport and the drivers should make them get off the bus. I understand why they don't, the abuse and hassle you get when people just say 'no' like kids do in school. I doubt public shaming would work either. They would just play the victim card and before you know it their mother will be plastered all over the paper stating that her precious wretch was bullied and shamed on a public bus for anxiety or some other nonsense.

WonderingWanda · 26/10/2023 10:45

What can you do though? Maybe crack open a packed lunch of something really stinky like fish pie and waft it in their direction? Set off a stink bomb....I can't imagine anyone wanting to vape around one of them. Mist the air with a harmless but potent essential oil spray. Whatever you do you run the risk of being the victim of verbal or physical abuse. It's crap but that's how it is these days.

Dallidalli · 26/10/2023 13:05

That's exactly my worry. I am well aware that kids these days can respond with violent behaviour to being told off.

As to what could be done about it...I can't make them stop. But I can make them uncomfortable 😂.

Happened yesterday as well, girl next to me vaping and I seriously considered taking my heavy boots off. How petty is that tho! Instead I opened the window next to her when she took another draw. She got the gist, the next free seat got available and she changed.

I've read on Reddit that this behaviour could also stem from kids going straight into vaping, so there wasn't a need for going outside for a cigarette. It's a different cultural perception

Has anyone else ever said something? What was your experience and their reaction?

I don’t think it’s allowed. I’ve seen many bus signs stating it’s not allowed as it is smoking. I was on a bus once and the bus driver reiterated this to the vaper.

RudsyFarmer · 26/10/2023 13:07

I don’t know enough about it. Is there nicotine in the steam they are putting into the atmosphere or is it literally just the sickly sweet smell you don’t like?

Comtesse · 26/10/2023 13:11

I told a kid off on the tube the day when he was vaping and blowing gross smoke all over my daughter. GROSS. He did put it away to be fair.

I think we’ve all got to speak up. If say everyone on the bus gives them crap then that will stop it….

Dallidalli · 26/10/2023 13:19

It's the germ and nicotine smog cloud they are spreading. The smell is another thing, I'm the same with people spraying around deodorant it's just overwhelming.

Obviously one person vaping is not causing that much damage but think about if that becomes more the norm, more people start vaping on public transport...

People with asthma and sensory processing issues will suffer for it. It's just unhygienic in a small enclosed space.

I think it's up to individual bus companies, rather than a blanket ban nationwide.

CesareBorgia · 26/10/2023 13:26

I've never been on any public transport where it's allowed - it's punishable by a fine, in my experience. Of course, that's not to say people obey the rules b ut presumably there's a procedure drivers are meant to follow when it happens.

And this is why we shouldn't get rid of non-driving staff on public transport.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 26/10/2023 13:28

I think it's just absolute entitlement.

Pleasestopit · 26/10/2023 13:41

I think it's just typical of the entitlement and general lack of consideration for others that we're seeing more and more of these days, from vaping to feet on the seats to yelling and screeching at top volume and playing loud games/music on phones without using earphones. Mostly it's teenagers but not always and I always wonder what the hell the parents are doing and how they're being brought up. Manners generally are severely lacking these days and I think we're becoming more unpleasant as a society, unfortunately

Dallidalli · 26/10/2023 14:40

I genuinely believe if more people would say something people vaping would not feel as secure doing it on public transport. There is something seriously wrong if that young person has so little resilience they can't go within their crutch for a short period of time.
