NYE what do people do?

Do you do a house party with friends or family? Go out to a restaurant or party? Do you go away, if yes, where is nice to spend NYE

We haven't really 'done' NYE since covid, before that the kids were small so we did a few dinners with neighbours with similarly aged dc.

I am not a huge fan as I like to sleep early😂but willing to stay up till midnight if it's fun. So what are your plans?

We’ll invite a couple of couples over and their dc and have food - nibbles, drinks and games.

stayathomer · 25/10/2023 21:30

A few years ago I tried to get a kind of family reunion together and it failed spectacularly, with people telling me they hate nys and hadn’t wanted to go (they told me gently after we’d all calmed down!) so I’ll go back to my usual as long as the kids don’t stay up, which is watching tv, moaning about old langs and crying for the people who didn’t make it:( (sorry, there’s something about ny that does this to me!)

BitofaStramash · 25/10/2023 21:31

Traditional Scottish Hogmanay house party with extended family and sometimes some post-Bells first footers (neighbours, friends).

Food is homemade steak pie, neeps and tatties followed by clootie dumpling and custard.

Lots of booze.
Watch Only An Excuse on the TV
Maybe some board games

Open the curtains at midnight to watch all the fire at the Bells.

We go on a massive family holiday (dhs siblings and they partners and kids and even some grandkids now!), out somewhere remote and have a big party. Kids all stay up as late as they can (mostly all past midnight now, buffet, playlist that everyone has added to, games, fireworks at midnight, congas, loads of food, a week that’s just so bloody fun. Lots of walks, beach trips, pub lunches then home for a fire and cooking. Very family orientated. My dc (and their cousins) all say it’s their favourite holiday of the year!
It started when the eldest sibling had dc and didn’t want to go out for new year so they went away, just her, her dh and the baby. And everyone started tagging along 😂

Libertass · 25/10/2023 21:36

I used to go out & get pissed when I was younger, because that’s what everyone did, but these days I’m not a party person at all, so it’s a nice dinner with DP & a bottle of wine before seeing the new year in then bed. We usually go to Cheltenham races on New Year’s day, so we don’t stay up late the night before.

Therealjudgejudy · 25/10/2023 21:37

Same as a pp. Stay in with my partner after a few afternoon drinks in the pub. Order a takeaway and watch the fireworks from bed...if im still awake!

gotomomo · 25/10/2023 21:37

Local pubs all put on functions, we get tickets for whatever looks the best line up music wise

TheUltima · 25/10/2023 21:38

Us too! I remember as kids it was like a 3/4 day party of people hosting and going to lot's of parties. Everyone was always so happy and very merry haha. I try to recreate that although it does feel like it's a dying thing. NYE makes me feel a bit emotional and very patriotic 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

StarDolphins · 25/10/2023 21:42

I used to be out all night then get home at 10am NYD but now I’m lucky if I can stay awake until 10pm! Not really a fan of letting the new year in, I much prefer Christmas Eve.

megletthesecond · 25/10/2023 21:42

Nothing. I'm 49. I've done NYE about 4 times in my life and it's overrated.
Bed at normal time for me and up for a run in the morning.

Scarlettpixie · 25/10/2023 21:47

Buffet tea and then a film/some telly with my teen. We will watch the last leg and the fireworks on telly, the live music if it is someone we like otherwise a bit of Jooles. I will be in bed by 1am. This might be the last time he wants to stay in with me and not be out with his mates so I will make the most of it!

burntoutnurse · 25/10/2023 21:48

The local pub. Usually does a quiz/kareoke. Only open for regulars. It's a good night, and only a 5 min walk

Cumbrianlife · 25/10/2023 21:48

We go out for a fairly late dinner now with DC (youngest will be 18 this NYE), usually an Indian restaurant. Then it's down to the beach with a bottle of champagne to watch the fireworks and see in the New Year. Even when DC were tiny we'd get a takeaway from a decent restaurant. Later we'd wake them to go down to the sands wearing a onesie, coat and wellies.

theduchessofspork · 25/10/2023 21:49

House party with old friends

We used to rent cottages in obscure snowbound places, but these days someone usually hosts.

LlynTegid · 25/10/2023 22:10

If there is something I like, the cinema or the theatre, though the number with anything on NYE evening, even say at 7pm, is getting less.

HoHoHoliday · 25/10/2023 22:29

I've always longed to go to (or host!) a big party, all dressed up, and join in a big group countdown to midnight, just like you might see on tv.
Reality is, I honestly don't know anyone who bothers with new year so I usually spend the evening on the sofa feeling a bit lonely and miserable then watch the fireworks on bbc and go to bed just after midnight.

SallyWD · 25/10/2023 22:30

Nothing. I'm usually asleep before midnight. Perfectly happy with this.

maddening · 25/10/2023 22:31

Since ds was born ds and I have gone to my parents (dh doesn't do NYE) and we have nibbles and play games and have some champagne. We watch the.fireworks at midnight and toast the new year.

But this year ds and I are going to see Pulp at Edinburgh Hogmonay! Super excited!

PinkRoses1245 · 25/10/2023 22:31

Usually go to friends for dinner or sometimes go out for dinner then back to friends for drinks

Elphame · 25/10/2023 23:40

It's my birthday so we spend it with friends - ones we've been spending it with for many years now.

Isthisrealorjustfantasy · 26/10/2023 07:18

Spend it with friends we’ve been seeing for years on NYE since having DCs (who now do their own thing)
or
A local friend has a small gathering
V rare we do nothing!
Pre-kids was a party every year!

squashi · 26/10/2023 07:21

Usually spend it having dinner with friends, then go out into the garden to see the NY fireworks. I'm not a huge fan though - had some fairly disappointing ones in the past, with expectations a bit too high! I enjoyed the 2020-1 one where nobody was doing anything and I just stayed in on my own with the fire, wine & music.

Disturbia81 · 26/10/2023 10:03

I've never gone out and celebrated but at least stayed up. Now I like to go to bed before it happens and just wake up in a new year. I'm a happy person so I'm not sure why!

JustKen · 26/10/2023 10:31

If I'm not working NYE it's usually spent with STBXH & DD. He prepares a small buffet and we watch films until a bit before midnight when we watch the London fireworks on the telly. As a transport worker I know how hellish it is to get around London on that night (getting home from a late shift at 11pm is bad enough) so I stay in. The local pubs charge silly money to get in & I really can't be bothered. No-one I know does anything special either!
